Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Airfares this year
by Claudia Sonea

Up to now, it is not out of ordinary to hear that the airfares rose. After the oil crisis began, all means of transport have raised their fares, especially the airlines. The main reason is obviously to cope with the new costs and to remain in business. However, sometimes the increase in airfare was not successful because not all the airlines would do it at the same pace, so they had to give up the increase and think about something else.
The 13 percent increase in oil prices had to reflect in the cost, thus airlines having to pay 77 percent more than what they paid until now for jet fuel lead to the fares’ increase accompanied by a stream of firings and the list of negative effects can continue. Only this year there were seventeenth attempt to raise airfares, why would than surprise the 7.5 percent increase of the average cost to fly one mile in the U.S. on a commercial? Last year in July, the oil price was not $4/ a gallon.
On Wednesday, the Air Transport Association of America (represents passenger and cargo carriers in the U.S) confirmed the increase of the average price/ mile/ passenger, without taking into account the government taxes and fees that make nearly 14 percent of an average domestic roundtrip ticket or 22 for connecting flights. Apparently the FareCompare.com (a site of searching and comparing airfares) will not show any other roll back that would save our pocket from becoming empty, but there is still the hope that the new launch in the Internet industry will bring airlines enough money to stop the increases and the firings. Good luck!

The number of cancelled flights is increasing
by Martina Janeckova

As Roger and Pat Bate were hurrying to catch their plane, they got a call that many will receive from their airline this year. The Continental employee told them that their flight had been cancelled and they should come back to the airport the next day. However they refused this and managed to think out an alternative route home. Their case was nothing unusual, this year 65,000 flights have been cancelled so far, which is almost as many as of the whole year 2007 according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Airlines are planning to cut the number of available seats on flights even more after the summer travel season. United airlines said it will cut 14 percent of available seats on domestic flights by the end of the year, the numbers are similar for other airlines too. American airlines will cut 12 percent, Continental Airlines Inc. 11 percent , Delta Air Lines Inc. 13 percent, Northwest Airlines Corp. 9.5 percent and US Airways Group Inc. 8 percent of their seating capacity. Airlines hope that by cutting the travel options they can increase fares and compensate increasing fuel costs.
As the number of cancellations is getting higher, people should be aware that their flight might not be waiting for them at the airport and keep several things in mind:
- come to the airport early with your itinerary printed and your mobile phone charged,
- read airline’s “ Contract of Carriage” policy to know your rights,
- make sure you have an assigned seat,
- find alternative routes to your destination.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Počet zrušených letov sa zvyšuje
by Martina Janeckova

American airlines znížia počet miest na sedenie o 12 percent, Continental Airlines Inc. o 11 percent, Delta Air Lines Inc. o 13 percent, Northwest Airlines Corp. 9,5 percent a US Airways Group Inc. o 8 percent.
- nájdite si alternatívne trasy do vašej destinácie.

New, safer planes
by Livia Cseresova

On Wednesday, 12 years after an explosion destroyed TWA Flight 800 airplane, killing 230 people, federal officials said that a device to prevent plane from exploding has to be installed on some passenger jets and cargo planes. Mark Rosenker, the Chairman of National Transportation Safety Board believes “this will save lives”.

As Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said, the new safety requirement applies to new passenger and cargo airplanes that have center fuel tanks- just like the mentioned exploded TWA 800.

It is needed to adapt to changes the 2,730 existing Airbus and Boeing passenger planes, built with center wing fuel tanks since 1991. Manufacturers have two years for it, but Boeing is making some new planes with changes already.

The changes will finally end a long story in federal aviation society. The cause of explosion of Boeing 12 years ago was, as identified by the National Transportation Safety Board shortly after the accident, the ignition of oxygen in a partly empty fuel tank that had been sitting in the sun for hours before takeoff. However, the FBI believed that the plane exploded because of a bomb.

In 2005, the Federal Aviation Administration proposed a rule to prevent future explosions, but the aviation industry said the price was too high.

The definite rule requires aircraft manufacturers and passenger airlines to install devices that replace oxygen with inert nitrogen in fuel tanks as they empty.

The spokeswoman for Air transport Association of America, Victoria Day, said that the airlines “will, of course, comply with the rule."

Matt Ziemkiewicz lost his sister who was a flight attendant aboard TWA Flight 800. Ziemkiewicz said he was "disappointed this didn't happen sooner. We knew this was a preventable accident before Flight 800." But he is satisfied with the new rule, which is "reasonable and realistic."

The price of new technology will probably range from $92,000 to $311,000 per aircraft. The exact cost depends on a size of aircraft, Mary Peter said. According to Robert Strugell, FAA Acting Administrator, the cost to industry overall will be about $1 billion.

Initial estimates about 10 years ago put the potential cost of protecting fuel tanks from explosion as high as $36 billion.

Qantas CEO: Emergency likely beyond its control
by Michaela Vargova

SYDNEY, Australia - The Qantas plane forced to make an emergency landing in the Philippines after a massive hole tore through its side.
QF Flight 30 from London to Melbourne had left Hong Kong airport after a stopover at 9 a.m. local time. The plane was travelling at 29,000 feet when a loud explosion ripped through the plane's underside. Immediately, it lost pressure and descended rapidly before making an emergency landing at Manila airport. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries, airline officials said. The passengers were finally taken to several hotels in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and then left just before midnight on another plane to Melbourne. The chief executive of Qantas Airways', Australia's largest airline, praised the pilots and the rest of the crew for how they handled Friday's events.
Australian investigators traveled to Manila to inspect the damaged aircraft. Experts said the hole in the fuselage, which measured about 2mx4m, could have been caused by metal fatigue, an internal explosion or a combination of both. The damage occurred at a point where the highly explosive oxygen bottles are stored.
Aviation sources also revealed that aircraft engineers had noted a "lot" of corrosion during the refit. According to aviation experts, investigators would also closely examine the maintenance regime of the ageing 747, registered in 1991.
Friday's incident remembered the case of 1988 in which a large section of an older Aloha Airlines jetliner was torn off over Hawaii due to metal fatigue. Although the pilots were able to land, a flight attendant died and many of the 89 passengers were seriously injured.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Quantas CEO: Nekontrolovateľný stav núdze
by Michaela Vargova

Pasažieri boli šťastlivo umiestnení do miestnych hotelov v Manile, aby mohli byť následne krátko po polnoci prevezení do pôvodne cieľovej stanice - Melbourne.

by Barbora Haramiova

Chris Cantell Discusses Business: Pickens predal celý svoj podiel v Yahoo
by Livia Cseresova

Yang chcel 37 dolárov a Microsoft z ponuky vycúval.

Microsoft taktiež ponúkol nákup on-line vyhľadávacích operácií Yahoo v komplexnejšej dohode, a to dokonca dvakrát.

Qantas will repair its plane damaged by explosion
by Livia Cseresova

Qantas, Australian airline which is said to be one of the safest airlines in the world, will repair a huge hole in the side of its jetliner caused by exploding oxygen bottle, as it said on Thursday. By doing this, it will preserve its record of never losing a jet plane.

As the investigators said on Wednesday, the oxygen bottle exploded last Friday during a flight from English London to Australian Melbourne and the pilots were forced to quickly go down thousands of feet and land in emergency in the Philippines with four instrument systems disabled.

Qantas will, however, repair the damaged jet, according to the spokesman of the world's second oldest airline. The spokesman, who, as is common for the company, wanted to stay in anonymity, said they "certainly believe it is repairable".

As said by Paul Cousins of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association, representing 1,500 engineers employed by Australia's flagship airline, the jet seems to be savable.

Cousins also said that he would "expect Qantas to guard fairly closely their reputation for never having lost a jet aircraft, but in this particular case, from what I've seen from pictures, the aircraft is repairable."

Qantas, which had experiences troubles with airplanes before, rather spent almost $100 million on repairs to a plane that ran off in Bangkok in 1999 during a storm, just not to write it off. And Cousins said pilots and engineers claimed that the plane was just like new after the repairing.

Also, a Qantas-leased plane was close to be written off in February, after landing in the Australian city of Darwin. But according to Cousins, the airframe was unharmed and that jet was mended. No people were injured back then.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Qantas opraví svoje liedalo zničené explóziou
by Livia Cseresova

by Veronika Pellerova

Egypt's Giza Pyramid's change
by Livia Cseresova

The holidays in Egypt will not be (and already aren’t) the same as they used to be. While now and especially in the past during visiting the famous beautiful Giza Pyramids, there are peddlers selling camel rides and pharaonic charms everywhere, it should change in the near future.

The first step of modernizing the destination was getting rid of the hawkers, and so making it more attractive for tourists. Also, security cameras and 12-mile fence with infrared sensors surrounding the place should be helpful in making it more tourist-friendly.

According to Egypt’s chief archaeologist, Zahi Hawass, they are just “protecting both the tourists and the ancient monuments.” The Giza pyramids, the 5,000-year-old Wonder of the World have been strangely open to tourists. In other World Wonders like Colosseum in Rome or Acropolis in Greece, the security is very tight and the movement of tourists is controlled.

The “protecting”, however, really saddens the hawkers, who were often looking to benefit from the tourist dollar and had free rein. They were following the visitors offering rides on camels and selling imitations of pharanoic statues and scarabs, T-Shirts and many other souvenirs. It will become history soon, though.

One of the hawkers said: “I've been working here for 25 years. Now I don't know if I will be here tomorrow. I have five children, a wife. What will happen to us?”

Kamal Wahid, the general director of the site claims that removing the sellers won’t be sudden or unkind. But “two years from now, you won't see them inside the site.”

Tourists seem to be very satisfied with the current –and the future- situation. Some say “it looks clean and beautiful” and that they feel “very comfortable and secure.”

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Zmena Giza pyramíd v Egypte
by Livia Cseresova

Taktiež, bezpečnostné kamery a 12-míľový plot s infračervenými senzormi obklopujúce miesto by mali byť nápomocné v robení ho priateľskejším pre turistov.

Podľa hlavného egyptského archeológa, Zahi Hawass-a, iba „ochraňujú turistov, a taktiež antické monumenty.“ Giza pyramídy, 5000 rokov starý div sveta, boli dlho prekvapivo otvorené pre turistov.

Jeden z predajcov povedal: „Pracoval som tu celých 25 rokov. A teraz nemám predstavu či tu zajtra budem. Mám päť detí a manželku.

by Veronika Pellerova

Ahora no sé si estaré aquí mañana. Tengo cinco niños, una esposa. ¿Qué pasará con nosotros? ".

Why do Britons behave so badly abroad?
by Beata Novomeska

It is known that the behavior of Britons abroad is inapt. I can confirm from my own experience. I live in Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. We were on ice cream in one restaurant. We sat down outside. We talked together, smiled each other, everything was fine. Than in a moment later there came a group of British tourists, men between 30-40. They ordered beer and started to speak together. They were extremely noisy and people who sat outside, started to leave. In 10 minutes time, there was n't anyone. Stuff in restaurant call their attention to their inappropriate behavior more times. But it didn't help. Masters of situation and the only customers in this restaurant became Britons. And I think it is only one of many other examples of British behavior abroad. It is known that our city, Bratislava, has the problems with British tourists.
Last year, young Briton was bathing naked in fountain before Slovak National Theater. He was masturbating. He was drunken. It was in the night and police arrested him. He was getting to married and it was his farewell with freedom. It wasn't the first case of bathing in town's fountain of British tourists. Britons go to Bratislava, because it is cheap destination for them and they don't respect the rules, which they should respect. I think they didn't afford many things which they do abroad, because in their country they would have bigger sanctions as they have somewhere abroad. I think they should aware that they can't behave like that, because they are humans, not animals. If not, they won't be welcome.
Problems with Britons are not only in my country, but in other countries, too. For example in Spain, United States, Cyprus, Dubai or Greece. I think Britons should think of themselves and cause less problems than do now. It would be better for themselves and foreign countries, too.

by Beata Novomeska

Môžem to potvrdiť z vlastnej skúsenosti. Boli extrémne hluční a ľudia, ktorí sedeli vonku začali odchádzať.

JetBlue readies new post-9/11 terminal at JFK
by Radka Konkolova

People use all of the means of transport to reach their destination. All of them want to use the most advantageous possibility. Recently travelling by planes is very popular, especially in America. It is quite cheap and very fast. And the current offer from airways' side is also very interesting. But sometimes can the terminals cause the problems. There can be many people, little space and kind of chaos. Even in some special cases passengers have to stay there because of bad weather conditions or so, what is really unpleasant.

So some airways wanted to improve some terminals. So JetBlue wanted. Terminal 6, which is part of the biggest US airport of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York was out of duty for four years. It needed a change. Now it is completely different and modern. It includes more and better security elements. The new terminal features a 20-lane security checkpoint, the largest screening area as well as fully automated bag screening and wide open spaces to maximize efficiency of passenger flow. The new space is now connected to the landmark Trans World Airlines terminal, designed by architect Eero Saarinen, which was built in 1962 and closed in October 2001. This terminal was built in futuristic spirit and the connection of this historic and new one is really interesting and unique. It is predicted that this terminal will be quite busy because JetBlue expects approximately 250 flights daily.

But at first JetBlue will welcome an invited group of more than 1,000 frequent fliers to try whether everything is going alright. It will be kind of simulation, while these people will be handed a list of details about their simulated flight, including even the pseudonym.
This terminal is now very large and besides various recesses it includes also huge "Marketplace" in the middle of it. This place is wide open space with many airport "restaurants" and kiosks which offer the possibility for passengers to eat and lounge. There are also several stores with clothing, books, souvenirs as well as rest rooms and free wireless access. JetBlue is already prepared to install touch-screen food orders to the gates.

Other advantage, or thing to meet the passengers, is rubber floor in security space. This solution is antiskid and it is not as cold as tile for example, and mainly it is quite comfortable for shoeless feet. Behind this zone there are several benches you can use for taking your socks and shoes back. The parts of this terminal are also new x-ray machines which are more effectual and faster than metal detectors, so that is the reason why there are twice as many x-rays than metal detectors.

I have never been to JFK Airport or even to this terminal, but in the picture it seems truly huge and well managed. And probably stay at this terminal, Terminal 6, could be quite pleasant and maybe also good experience. You have to judge it by yourselves!

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: JetBlue pripravuje nový terminál po 11. septembri na letisku J. F. Kennedyho
by Radka Konkolova

A táto zmena stála 743 amerických dolárov. Teraz je terminál úplne iný a moderný. Obsahuje viac a lepšie bezpečnostné prvky.

Bude to taká simulácia, keďže títo ľudia dostanú zoznam s podrobnosťami o ich simulačnom lete dokonca aj so pseudonymami.

Expensive vacations
by Romana Otockova

The European summer vacation just isn't what it used to be. With economies stagnating and inflation in the euro zone at about 4 percent, people are cutting the length of their holiday stay, vacationing close by, and in some cases, just staying home. The deepening economic malaise has made many wary of splurging on expensive breaks. And would-be travelers have been hit by soaring costs in Europe for food, road trips and air travel — in short, just about everything needed for a successful holiday.
Many of would-be travelers decided to stay at home for holidays and planned alternative program. Parisians have very good imitation of summer beach on the bank of the Seine. Women in bikinis, ice cream stands almost everywhere and DJ spinning summer tunes – nearly perfect compensation of real holiday. But the atmosphere, hot weather and similar things cannot replace the real hot summer vacation by the sea.
Many of people have to work also through August to save some money and go away. Some European leaders also have shown restraint so as not to shock their countrymen with scenes of living it up during the economic downturn. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown opted for a quiet holiday in the countryside. French President Nicolas Sarkozy, nicknamed the "bling-bling president" for his penchant for borrowing private jets and yachts, took an ordinary airline flight to his wife Carla's Mediterranean villa.
Doubling the cost of everything made problems to many of European people, but also to these, who are from beyond the Pacific. Vacation is perfect time for relax, release and rest, and for those who cannot afford it its really bad situation. We can only hope, the situation will get better.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Drahé dovolenky
by Romana Otockova

Európska letná dovolenka už nie to, čo kedysi bývalo.
Ženy v bikinách, stánky so zmrzlinou takmer všade, DJ púšťajúci letné hity – takmer perfektná kompenzácia skutočných prázdnin. Ale atmosféra, horúce počasie a podobné veci nemôžu nahradiť skutočnú horúcu dovolenku pri mori.
Mnoho ľudí ja taktiež počas prázdnin nútených pracovať, aby si ušetrili nejaké peniaze a mohli si užiť dovolenku.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: With airlines economizing pilots are put under pressure
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Being the pilot itself and having responsibility for hundreds of people aboard the plane is stressing enough, but these days it seems the airlines eager to cut costs are taking it to another level. In order to save some money airlines have reduced the amount of spare fuel on airplanes, which off course is making pilots uneasy. Less fuel means that in case of delayed landing or bad weather conditions pilots will be forced to emergency landing on some nearby airport. With insufficient amount of fuel pilots are put under pressure, and airlines statements to its employees are only contributing to this. Take for example Continental Airlines bulletin saying: “Adding fuel indiscriminately without critical thinking ultimately reduces profit sharing and possibly pension funding.” Airlines say planes remain safe, because they carry the amount of fuel required by the Federal Aviation Administration. Spare fuel aboard the plane should be enough to reach the destination and still be able to fly for about 45 minutes more. So far the inspections haven´t reported the violations to this rule. “All that carriers have done is ask pilots to justify when they want to have (fuel) beyond what is required by FAA,” said David Castelveter of the Air Transport Association, which represents U.S. airlines. The another argument is that less fuel equals less weight which enables planes to fly higher and burn less fuel, and also to carry more passengers or cargo. On the other hand there are pilots reports. Several months ago for example, captain of Boeing 747 has come across strong headwinds while crossing the Atlantic on his way to John F. Kennedy international Airport in New York and subsequently reported low amount of fuel. He wanted to stop in order to refuel but after consulting his operations manager who told him the fuel level was sufficient he went on. After the arrival at the Kennedy Airport he said that the plane had so little fuel that in case of any delay in landing “I would have to declare a fuel emergency.” And there are more we might say safety risk cases similar to this one reported by pilots.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Letecké spoločnosti šetria, piloti sú pod tlakom
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Leto i letni odmori.

Navistina bev vo panika. Isto kako so letot poln so patnici koi letaa kon Honolulu vo vtornikot. "Hej!

by Veronika Pellerova
