Qantas will repair its plane damaged by explosion
by Livia Cseresova

Qantas, Australian airline which is said to be one of the safest airlines in the world, will repair a huge hole in the side of its jetliner caused by exploding oxygen bottle, as it said on Thursday. By doing this, it will preserve its record of never losing a jet plane.

As the investigators said on Wednesday, the oxygen bottle exploded last Friday during a flight from English London to Australian Melbourne and the pilots were forced to quickly go down thousands of feet and land in emergency in the Philippines with four instrument systems disabled.

Qantas will, however, repair the damaged jet, according to the spokesman of the world's second oldest airline. The spokesman, who, as is common for the company, wanted to stay in anonymity, said they "certainly believe it is repairable".

As said by Paul Cousins of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association, representing 1,500 engineers employed by Australia's flagship airline, the jet seems to be savable.

Cousins also said that he would "expect Qantas to guard fairly closely their reputation for never having lost a jet aircraft, but in this particular case, from what I've seen from pictures, the aircraft is repairable."

Qantas, which had experiences troubles with airplanes before, rather spent almost $100 million on repairs to a plane that ran off in Bangkok in 1999 during a storm, just not to write it off. And Cousins said pilots and engineers claimed that the plane was just like new after the repairing.

Also, a Qantas-leased plane was close to be written off in February, after landing in the Australian city of Darwin. But according to Cousins, the airframe was unharmed and that jet was mended. No people were injured back then.
