Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Airfares this year
by Claudia Sonea
Up to now, it is not out of ordinary to hear that the airfares rose. After the oil crisis began, all means of transport have raised their fares, especially the airlines. The main reason is obviously to cope with the new costs and to remain in business. However, sometimes the increase in airfare was not successful because not all the airlines would do it at the same pace, so they had to give up the increase and think about something else.
The 13 percent increase in oil prices had to reflect in the cost, thus airlines having to pay 77 percent more than what they paid until now for jet fuel lead to the fares’ increase accompanied by a stream of firings and the list of negative effects can continue. Only this year there were seventeenth attempt to raise airfares, why would than surprise the 7.5 percent increase of the average cost to fly one mile in the U.S. on a commercial? Last year in July, the oil price was not $4/ a gallon.
On Wednesday, the Air Transport Association of America (represents passenger and cargo carriers in the U.S) confirmed the increase of the average price/ mile/ passenger, without taking into account the government taxes and fees that make nearly 14 percent of an average domestic roundtrip ticket or 22 for connecting flights. Apparently the FareCompare.com (a site of searching and comparing airfares) will not show any other roll back that would save our pocket from becoming empty, but there is still the hope that the new launch in the Internet industry will bring airlines enough money to stop the increases and the firings. Good luck!
