New wave of flight cancellations due to volcanic ash
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Northern Ireland airspace has been shut down due to new surge of volcanic ash from Iceland volcanoes. The cloud that disrupted travel plans of many people once again is headed north-west. "Unfortunately, yet again, a mixture of volcanic activity and weather systems have conspired to bring a cloud of ash down towards the UK,“ said Jonathan Astill the air traffic authority, the National Air Traffic Service. "As a result we've now got a cloud of high density volcanic ash rapidly encroaching on Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man." The plans of travelers are now threatened not only by the upcoming British Airways strike, but also the volcanic ash cloud. Many airlines w! ere angered by the move and called it an exaggeration. Sir Richard Branson from Virgin Atlantic, for example, called the closure of Manchester airport “beyond a joke” and appealed to the government to “avoid further unnecessary damage to the UK economy and lives of travelers.” He argued that in France they experienced similar conditions last week and still about 1,000 flights took off from the country´s airports. According to the forecasts and Nats experts, the wind should change its direction and take the ash cloud away from Britain by the end of the week. Ash from Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull has been troubling travelers and airlines since April. Seismic activity of the volcano began at the end of 2009 and was gradually rising until the first eruption on 20 March 2010. The second eruption occurred on 14 April 2010 and created an ash cloud. The ash cloud is currently in a height of about 6-7 kilometers. In the period since April, the Iris! h airline Ryanair has been fined 3 million euros by Italy for ! not offe ring sufficient help to passengers whose flights were cancelled during the time of closures.

Speculatii in legatura cu zborul 447
by Claudia Sonea

Speculations on the Air France Flight 447
by Claudia Sonea

Almost a year has passed since 229 people have lost their lives in a flight that would remain in Air France's history as the deadliest and the most controversial air disaster. The French Airline has 75 years of experience in transporting passengers and cargo, yet the terrible plane crash is a red mark on its reputation. In order to find out what went wrong with the Airbus A330-203 that seemed to fly normally, it has become vital to recover the black box. According to the official statement, the Air France Flight 447 was supposed to transport passengers from Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport! . Mainly the aircraft has started to experience problems from 2006 when it was involved in a ground collision with Airbus A321-211, then in April 2009 it was subject to a major overhaul. Why someone would put the aircraft up on the flight schedule just one month after it had major technical problems? On June the 1st the commercial flight from Brazil to France transformed into a nightmare by crashing over the Atlantic Ocean and killing everyone on board. The causes have yet to be identified and there are various controversies hypothesis of what could have happened. A sure answer that would clear all doubts is that faulty speed readings encountered a month previously to the crash have generated the problem. Without any witness, any black box, there are only speculations to what triggered the disappearance of the airbus from all radars and its landing on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. For now, let’s keep a moment of silence in ho! nor of those who lost their lives…

Here we come again: airport closures
by Barbora Misakova

I am lucky I don’t need to fly. But this kind of silly joke probably doesn’t make laugh anyone. But taking it too serious will help us neither. The fact is, that nature is playing games with us and as it seems it is really enjoying it. The Icelandic volcano became famous when a month ago forced many European airports to cancel their flights and most of them also completely suspend their activities. When the whole situation calmed down a bit, the volcano has “stricken” again. Britain and Ireland had to close part of their airspace as new, fresh cloud of ash arrived. Many flights had to be canceled or at least restricted. As informed the World Tourism ! Organization, first volcano “strike” caused the European tourism industry lost 1.72 billion Euros and airspace closures cost Europe’s airlines 1.5 billion to 2.5 billion Euros. These numbers will probably grow up a bit as volcano hasn’t told us everything yet. Seven airports in Canary Islands and mainland Spain were closed yesterday as drifting ash cloud from the volcano saw them. Spanish airspace was restricted due to safety concerns on Monday. As informed Spanish air traffic control agency Aena, four airports in the Canary Islands and three in the south of mainland Spain were forced to shut down. Aena’s spokeswoman couldn’t say when these airports would be reopened as restrictions of flying through airspace is not the same as airport closure. The time will show if the volcano calms down. There is nothing we could do – that is stubbornness of nature!

Volcanic ash disrupts air travel at southern Europe
by Magdalena Rosova

A new ash cloud from Iceland's Eyjafjoell volcano is again causing troubles. The cloud has disrupted air travel in Portugal, Germany and Austria on Sunday. Hundreds of flights were grounded and some European airspace was closed. Officials of Lisbon's airport said the airport would be closed at least until midday Monday. More than 200 flight were canceled in Portugal, 71 at Lisbon. On Tuesday, Pope Benedict XVI is expected to arrive for a four-day visit to the country. According to Vatican, in spite of disruptions in air travel pope's trip to Lisbon is still on schedule. The volcanic ash paralyzed air travel across southern Europe, especially in France and Italy and sp! read also into Austria and Germany. The second busiest airport in Germany, was closed at 1300 GMT on Sunday. Officials said 460 out of more than 1,000 scheduled flight had been closed at Munich. Fifteen long-distance flight were delayed and after the airport reopens they will take off. German weather service DWD expects the ash cloud to move from central Germany overnight Sunday. The cloud should leave the rest of the country during Monday. Czech capital Prague was not affected by the ash cloud, only airspace at south of the country was closed. Austria has partially closed its airspace, traffic at Vienna, Innsbruck, Linz and Salzburg has been affected. According to coordinator of air traffic control across Europe only about 24,000 flight took place on Sunday, which is about 500 less than the average for this time of year. Eurocontrol says the ash cloud is continuously affecting transatlantic flights.

Nature & Economy
by Barbora Misakova

Man is maybe able to dominate machines such as cars and aircrafts, but human race is not all-powerful. Actually we are just defenseless puppets in comparison with power of nature that dominate us. One single storm or just a bit stronger wind and we just can say bye to our plans whatever they were. We can invest all our money and energy, but when nature decides that it is time for rain or snow, we are out of luck. And to be honest, sometimes we deserve it. Last time when nature affected course of human history was in April 2010. It was one Icelandic volcano that showed us what the nature is capable of. And there is nothing to be ashamed of. Its ash, that hit even Czech Repub! lic, caused last month air travel chaos in the whole Europe when some 100,000 flights had to be cancelled and millions of passengers got stuck at the airports. Although most of them were reopened, as it seems it is not over yet. Britain and Ireland had to close part of their airspace Wednesday as new, fresh cloud of ash arrived. Flights to and from Scotland were cancelled and flights from Irish Dublin faced restrictions. As British Airways informed, they canceled all flights to and from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen just like the Ryanair did. According to the World Tourism Organization, the European tourism industry lost 1.72 billion Euros and airspace closures cost Europe’s airlines 1.5 billion to 2.5 billion Euros. And that is not a joke!

Continental and United merger to create the world´s largest airlines
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Two of the biggest American airline carriers, Houston-based Continental Airlines and United Airlines, agreed on a merger. If the deal truly becomes a reality, it would create the world´s largest airline company. The joint company would bear the United name with its headquarters in Chicago. Continental CEO Jeffrey Smisek would become the head of the company while United CEO Glenn Tilton would assume the post of chairman. The company that would come out of the merger would cover the whole world basically with a wide range of choices for travelers. Although the deal is officially described as that of two equals, it is already clear that the United Airlines will have the ! greater deal of power. Not only the headquarters will be in the United´s hometown of Chicago, but it is said the United shareholders will own about 55 percent of the new company. "Now we've got a company that can really clearly compete against Delta," said an airline industry consultant Darryl Jenkins referring to Delta Airlines considered to be the world´s largest airlines when it comes to passenger traffic and fleet size. "Mergers are all about revenue, and this is a tremendous boost for revenue." Due to the recession the United reduced their capacity by 7.4 percent last year, while the Continental went 5.2 percent down. Delta currently has 20 percent domestic market share, however, the joint company of the United and the Continental would have 21 percent. Despite the fact that both sides agreed on merger, the approval from the government is still needed, which won´t be that easy given the current political circumstances. It will take months before the act! ual deal is delivered. The two airline companies have been con! sidering the merger for quite some time. They came very close to it in 2008, but the talks turned out as a failure after the Continental chose an alliance instead.
