Here we come again: airport closures
by Barbora Misakova

I am lucky I don’t need to fly. But this kind of silly joke probably doesn’t make laugh anyone. But taking it too serious will help us neither. The fact is, that nature is playing games with us and as it seems it is really enjoying it. The Icelandic volcano became famous when a month ago forced many European airports to cancel their flights and most of them also completely suspend their activities. When the whole situation calmed down a bit, the volcano has “stricken” again. Britain and Ireland had to close part of their airspace as new, fresh cloud of ash arrived. Many flights had to be canceled or at least restricted. As informed the World Tourism ! Organization, first volcano “strike” caused the European tourism industry lost 1.72 billion Euros and airspace closures cost Europe’s airlines 1.5 billion to 2.5 billion Euros. These numbers will probably grow up a bit as volcano hasn’t told us everything yet. Seven airports in Canary Islands and mainland Spain were closed yesterday as drifting ash cloud from the volcano saw them. Spanish airspace was restricted due to safety concerns on Monday. As informed Spanish air traffic control agency Aena, four airports in the Canary Islands and three in the south of mainland Spain were forced to shut down. Aena’s spokeswoman couldn’t say when these airports would be reopened as restrictions of flying through airspace is not the same as airport closure. The time will show if the volcano calms down. There is nothing we could do – that is stubbornness of nature!
