Nature & Economy
by Barbora Misakova
Man is maybe able to dominate machines such as cars and aircrafts, but human race is not all-powerful. Actually we are just defenseless puppets in comparison with power of nature that dominate us. One single storm or just a bit stronger wind and we just can say bye to our plans whatever they were. We can invest all our money and energy, but when nature decides that it is time for rain or snow, we are out of luck. And to be honest, sometimes we deserve it. Last time when nature affected course of human history was in April 2010. It was one Icelandic volcano that showed us what the nature is capable of. And there is nothing to be ashamed of. Its ash, that hit even Czech Repub! lic, caused last month air travel chaos in the whole Europe when some 100,000 flights had to be cancelled and millions of passengers got stuck at the airports. Although most of them were reopened, as it seems it is not over yet. Britain and Ireland had to close part of their airspace Wednesday as new, fresh cloud of ash arrived. Flights to and from Scotland were cancelled and flights from Irish Dublin faced restrictions. As British Airways informed, they canceled all flights to and from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen just like the Ryanair did. According to the World Tourism Organization, the European tourism industry lost 1.72 billion Euros and airspace closures cost Europe’s airlines 1.5 billion to 2.5 billion Euros. And that is not a joke!
