False bomb threat scared 45 passengers
by Zivka Deleva

We live completely in a dangerous world. One word can make us frightened, devastated and extremely uptight. I am sure that no one would react well on the word “bomb”, but on the other hand, someone would only want to scare you if he or she writes the word in a plane’s bathroom. If someone has put a bomb in a plane, what’s the purpose to warn the people. But we are so much used to all kinds of threads so, we try to be the most hard-headed when our security is endangered. Forty five passengers and three crew members at a Continental Express flight from Houston to Washington, D.C were scared after someone wrote the word “bomb” on the mirror! in the bathroom. The flight was diverted to Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina. No explosive was found, and nothing was suspicious and unusual. The message left the impression that it could be a bomb situation on the airplane, said Ted Johnson, executive director of Piedmont Triad International Airport . In the purpose of the ongoing investigation, no one wants to share more details with the public on the written word. A lot of people participated in the investigation, FBI agents, police bomb squad, bomb-sniffing dogs. And every passenger was questioned by the police. The passengers still arrived on their final destination safe in Dulles, Virginia, about six hours after landing. It seems like these threads are more and more attractive to some foolish heads. Another American flight, a Delta Airlines, traveling from Paris to Atlanta had to retrace after a passenger claimed that there was a bomb in the plane. Unlike now, this US veteran of th! e wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has been charged with making a ! false bo mb threat. Everyone gets what he deserves.

Spectacular photos from the volcano due to the well chosen direction
by Zivka Deleva

You may have wondered how comes when the whole air traffic industry was afraid to fly due to the volcano’s ash in Iceland, few photographers were able to take magnificent pictures. The spectacular scenes of the ash, the falling rocks and the lava coming out of the crater could be taken, though flights were cancelled more than 1000 miles away. "The irony was not lost on us that we were flying within feet or yards of an erupting volcano when the volcano was basically grounding every flight in Europe" – said ABC News Neal Karlinsky, who visited Eyjafjallajokull volcano twice in a week. The thing is that the wind carried the dust in the southeast direction, so at l! east helicopters get closer to the volcano from the northwest. So, when something bad happens, people always try to use the best of it, so the Helicopter Service of Iceland plans to take passengers for a view, if the weather is nice. Unlike big planes, this situation is not so difficult for propeller airplanes and that’s how all those beautiful and authentic photographs were taken. It is interesting that the International airport that serves Reykjavik which is situated about two hours west of the critical place, didn’t stop its work, like all the other bigger European countries. According to the experience of CNN’s Gary Tuchman, the force of the volcano appeared as it is from some “other world”. "Boulders were catapulted out of it. Lightning bolts could be seen every few seconds from the black and white smoke coming out of the crater. We were transfixed by what we were seeing so close." – he wrote on his blog. In a meanwhile, European! flying companies pushed on the European Union to speed up a r! eform of the air traffic control system, due to the blocking of the big part of the airspace. "The worst is now over, but there is a huge amount of work to be done to deal with crisis management," EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said.

Letecká doprava po týždni obnovená
by Milota Sidorova

Autobusové a vlakové spoločnosti museli 24 hodín denne posilňovať spoje a predali enormný počt lístkov. #253;ch krajinách málo flexibilná a dosiahnute&! #318;n&# 225; forma dopravy. Budúcnosť však patrí pozemnej doprave s nízkymi palivovými vstupmi. Vlaky sa v tomto smere ukazujú najvýhodnejšie.

Aviation crisis week almost over!
by Milota Sidorova

The week of chaos and meltdown on world's airports is nearing its end. Most of the European aviation space was opened this morning. The green lights for flight turned on in Denmark, Sweeden, Finland and Britain, the countries seriously influenced with the dust and sand cloud from the Icelandic volcano. The situation down on Earth is chaotic and air companies do everything to satisfy the demand for tickets. During the week more than 95,000 flights were cancelled and thousands of people stayed all over the world. Most of them now wait in the line for the next free flight, but this may take weeks to find one. Surely you can imagine the situation.Air transporters also pressed E! U government with the request of pay back their loss caused by nature. Well, that's seems to be bit out of question and remains of American bailout during the crisis. Air companies said they lost over billion euro past five days and demand more money from European tax payers. They explain it with the same reason as American banks did – they were just too big to be bankrupted. But if this happens to another maybe even more important business, no action is taken. Why should we take care about profits of private companies who know the risks of its business. Air companies, more than any other company is dependent on weather conditions and has to count with these kinds of loss. Surely they do, but still they shout out loud, they were hurt, so they need money.During the week, the biggest looser was of course aviation transport, but on the other hand, the demand for bus and train transport enormously increased. Companies had to add more international lines to balance human j! am on airports. Also taxi companies made a fortune during the ! week. So me of them were offering the trips all over the Europe, if paid well. But when you are in need, you don't deal the price. This situation offers interesting insight to balance and disbalance of transport situation all over Europe. Major part is choosing airplanes, not knowing the risks and environmental threats. But the same results could be reached by using high-speed trains all over the continent. For instance, with TGW, private air traffic died in France and if you count the public benefit of such train and the private plan taking off with one businessman, you have to rethink the situation. Most of the times, high-speed trains would cover internal and international lines between the cities. But right now, they are much more expensive than the plane tickets that you can get sometimes even for few cents.Let's think and demand more.

Airlines in Europe resume flights
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Flight ban in Europe was finally lifted and airlines across the continent resumed flights Tuesday. The decision was made due to reports from meteorologists claiming that the ash cloud is about to drift south. Six day closure of European airspace was caused by the ash cloud from the erupted volcano in Island. "The volcanic eruption has reduced and the volcano is not currently emitting ash to altitudes that will affect the UK," said UK´s National Air Traffic Service (Nats). "Assuming there are no further significant ash emissions, we are now looking at a continuously improving situation." Together with the ban also the pressure from the aviation industry was lifted. The! ban cost airlines about $1.2 billion. They have been complaining about authorities´ decision to keep the ban on for so long as they did not consider the risk that serious in the last days. First flights of British Airways landed at Heathrow airport at 10 pm last night. Although the air traffic has been resumed the Civil Aviation Authority has imposed several restrictions that could result in delays in the following days. Most importantly, airlines are required to check airplanes for possible ash damage before and after the flights. "This solution has been reached as a result of the close working between the government, the CAA, airlines and the manufacturers, and will allow the thousands of UK citizens stranded abroad to return home to their families. The government will continue to work with all the relevant agencies to ensure that people can return to the UK quickly and safely, and that those booked on flights out of the UK can travel as soon as possible," said the! official statement from Downing Street. Air France announced ! it plans to resume all long-haul flights from Wednesday while Germany still keeps most of its airspace closed.

Europe wakes up, Iceland fears another eruption.
by Milota Sidorova

Up to 10 kilometers heigh rose the dust from Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull. Although it blocked out the most of aviation lines all over Europe, meteorologists from Carl's University Prague, Czech Republic showed enthusiasm the dust didn't enter the stratosphere and therefor it couldn't change the weather for next months. Because strong volcano eruptions caused extremely cold summer periods in the past. Dust in the air covered the sun and prevented from sunlight. If you think about the impact, lowering of sunlight causes direct loss on vegetation and harvest. Those years were “poor and hungry”. So far, this hasn't been the case of this year. Although volcano! is awake and produce huge cloud of dust and sand, a lot of European airports have reopened their check-ins late Monday. Still, the traffic is distant from the normal level and according meteorologists it will take weeks. Airports face crowds of people who got jammed for five days – there is no comfort for them, because if the flight was cancelled, they had had to buy a new ticket or to waited until the next flight was free. But this was not going to happen with more than 95,000 cancelled flights. Icelandic people however deal with bigger problems. This island is entirely dependent on foreign products and import – shutting the whole traffic, this can be a real problem for already troubled country. Farmers on countryside deal with heartbreaking decisions. Because of thick layer of dust that changed green plains into grey cemeteries, the animals can't feed. Farmers can't keep them, so the certain death is waiting for them. Here we can talk about environmental cris! is as well. But this was not the first volcanic eruption on Ic! eland. T he last major eruption took place in 1918 when nearby volcano Katla woke up. This time, scientists Eyjafjallajokull could pull the trigger and wake its sister Katla as well. The ground is not sleeping and instead of one eruption there is a chance for two volcanos showing their power.

Skúšobne lety naznačujú, že letecká doprava v Európe by mohla byť čoskoro obnovená
by Zuzana Zelenakova

„Žiadame, aby úrady dôkladne zvážili celú situáciu, pretože stopercentná bezpečnosť neexistuje,“ dodal viceprezident asociácie a zároveň pilot Boeingu 737 spoločnosti KLM Steven Verhagen. „Je jednoduché uzavrieť vzdušný priestor, lebo vtedy nie je ži! adne riziko. No skôr či neskôr budú musie&! #357; by ť lety obnovené.“ Podľa meteorológov je situácia naďalej nestabilná hlavne kvôli neustále sa meniacim vetrom. Takisto, erupcie sopky na Islande ešte úplne neustali a do vzduchu sa dostáva ďalší popol. Kvôli zákazu, ktorý trvá už od štvrtku museli svoje plány zmeniť milióny cestujúcich. Nemecká Lufthansa takisto vykonala lety, no ich cieľom bolo len dopraviť lietadlá do Frankfurtu, kde budú čakať kým nebude zákaz zrušený. „Po pristátí na letisku vo Frankfurte sme veľmi pozorne skontrolovali každé jedno lietadlo, aby sme zistili aké škody napáchal sopečný popol,“ povedal hovorca Lufthansy Wolfgang Weber. „Na žiadnom z desiatich lietadiel sme nenašli ani škrabanec.“

Airspace over Europe might be reopened soon suggest test flights
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Several European airlines dispatched test flights on Sunday to find out whether it is safe to fly again or not following the closure of European airspace due to volcanic ash cloud caused by the eruption of one of Iceland´s glaciers. Air France was one of those that reported successful first test flight over France. Airlines are developing pressure upon regulators to reopen the airspace also because they lose millions every day. Dutch airline KLM also informed about successful test flight over Europe and insisted on restoring air traffic over the continent. "The concentration of ash particles in the atmosphere is in all likelihood so little it poses no threat to air tr! ansport," said chairman of The Association of Dutch Pilots Evert van Zwol. "We are asking the authorities to really have a good look at the situation, because 100 percent safety does not exist," added vice president of the association and a Boeing 737 pilot for KLM Steven Verhagen. "It's easy to close down air space because then it's perfectly safe. But at some time you have to resume flights." However, according to the meteorologists, the situation is still unstable mainly due to constantly changing winds. In addition, the volcano in Iceland is still erupting occasionally spitting more ash into the atmosphere. Millions of passengers must have altered their plans due to the ban on air travel that was introduced Thursday. German Lufthansa also carried on flights but these were only to get the planes to the Frankfurt airport to wait until the restrictions are lifted. "We simply checked every single aircraft very carefully after the landing in Frankfurt to see whether there wa! s any damage that could have been caused by volcanic ash," sai! d Luftha nsa spokesman Wolfgang Weber. "Not the slightest scratch was found on any of the 10 planes."

European flights cancelled due to Iceland glacier´s eruption
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Volcanic ash from Iceland´s glacier Eyjafjallajokull caused cancellation of almost two-thirds of European flights. Ash spreading from the volcano, meaning small particles of rock, glass and sand, could cause a serious damage to jet engines and eventually bring down the plane. Volcanic cloud is currently located at altitudes of 7,6 to 9,1 kilometers. "It's been long established that flying through volcanic ash is a very dangerous safety risk," said Richard Taylor, a spokesperson for the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority. He points out the example of British Airways Boeing 747 that experienced failure of all four engines after flying into volcanic cloud over Indonesia in 19! 82. "The engines fortunately restarted, but it's clearly a very dangerous thing to do." "Combustion engines work through sucking in air, and that's what generates the power," he said. There were concerns in Poland, whether the cloud could threaten the arrival of the world leaders to the state funeral of President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria scheduled to take place in Krakow on Sunday. According to the air traffic agency Eurocontrol, almost two-thirds of European flights were cancelled Friday with airspace largely closed in most parts of north and central Europe. The International Air Transport Association added that the industry has suffered the loss of at least $200 million per day. Glacier Eyjafjallajokull is located in the southern part of Iceland and covers an area of about 100 square kilometers. Eruption from 14 April was the second in 2010. The first occurred on 20 March, but the following one that caused the air traffic disruption was about twenty times more po! werful. "We don't have many volcanoes in Europe," commented Da! vid Lear mount of Flight International, an aviation publication, on what aviation experts called one of the worst disruptions Europe has ever experienced. "The wind was blowing in the wrong direction."

Airspace over Europe is still under hostage of the volcano ash
by Zivka Deleva

The glass, sand and rock particles as an aftermath of the volcano eruption in Iceland are still giving headaches to the travelers that are left in the middle of nowhere. The ash that left after the volcano eruption on Wednesday wasn’t so friendly to the people and though nobody expected that it would keep so long over the sky of Europe, it still presents menace for the passengers. Few air companies made test flights to check out the safety of the sky, but the reactions are diverse. Some of the airlines say that their planes didn’t get damaged while passing through the ash. Seventeen countries have put padlocks on their skies and don’t give airline services! . As EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas hoped that today at least 50 percent of Europe’s airspace would be at no risk for flying. “We have an unprecedented situation. We cannot just wait until this ash cloud dissipates" - he added, concerning the authorities will to find a solution for the big problem. To solve this enigma, EU transport ministers today are supposed to get together on a conference by telephone. The biggest fear is that the volcanic ash can endanger aircraft engines and electronics. Passengers are not the only one to have headaches wasting time on some airport seats, but airlines are losing about 200 million dollars per day. As the European air traffic coordinating agency Eurocontrol says, 63.000 flights have been cancelled since last Thursday, and on Sunday there have only been 5.000 flights which is almost one fifth of the whole normal capacity. Eurocontrol co-ordinates air traffic control in 38 countries. Some experts think that the flig! ht bans are weight too restrictive. The most concerned are bus! inessmen and air companies’ owners. "The concentration of ash particles in the atmosphere is in all likelihood so little it poses no threat to air transport," said The Association of Dutch pilots’ chairman Evert van Zwol. Let’s wait and see what will the ministers decide today, do they find the situation so serious or the airspaces are going to be opened again.

Half of normal flights may run Monday
by Magdalena Rosova

The Spanish EU presidency claimed on Sunday that 50 percent of European flights should be restarted on Monday. The canceled flight due to clouds of ash from a volcano in Iceland caused massive travel disruptions all over Europe. Diego Lopez Garrido, Spanish secretary of state for EU affairs, said that half of the flights would be operating on Monday. There are thousands of people stuck at the airports and so it will be uneasy task which needs good coordination. The situation was not sustainable, said EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas after meeting of European aviation agency Eurocontrol, where European authorities discussed the effective and save solution for the cu! rrent situation. Siim Kallas said that it was impossible to wait until the ash flows simply disappear. There will be technical meeting of EU transport ministers on Monday, where information from Sunday's test flights in European countries will be assessed. The huge ash cloud moved more south and east on Sunday. European air traffic is being paralyzed for a fourth day and millions of passengers over the world are having troubles. It is the biggest airspace shutdown since World War II. Positive news is that Saturday's test flights by two airline companies, Dutch KLM and Germany's Lufthansa, did not find any damage caused by the volcanic ash. KLM's airplane flew about 10 kilometers over the Netherlands and there was no damage evident. If the further test flights are successful, the airline can get the permission to restart its operations. Lufthansa flew several planes on route Frankfurt – Munich. Inspection on airplanes did not find any damage or impact on the! engines. Air France conducted successful flights from Paris! to Toul ouse as well. Volcanic ash has an abrasive effect and there is risk that it can strip off vital aerodynamic surfaces of aircraft and paralyze its engine. Avionics and electronics can be also damaged.
