Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Estrellas
by Claudia Sonea

There is the endless need to compete for something from the moment we are born until we die. This need is present in everything and it is beneficial because it establishes high standards. What gets my attention is the need of competition in cooking and hotels. The Michelin Red Guide book is the one giving the norm since 1926 in cooking and hotels by offering stars.
For next year the guide is presenting Las Vegas. Five red pavilions were offered to Las Vegas Wynn hotel and only other eight hotels in all North America can be proud to possess the same number, while Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Palazzo, Trump International Hotel & Tower and Ritz-Carlton on Lake Las Vegas received four pavilions. What the guide took in consideration in presenting the 32 hotels listed in was cleanliness, overall service and comfort. In order to appear on its list you had to have base standards for cleanliness, safety and reliability.
In Las Vegas version of the Michelin Red Guide was also presented 140 restaurants. The top restaurant that received three stars was that of Joel Robuchon, MGM Grand hotel. Alex at Wynn Las Vegas, Guy Savoy at Caesars Palace and Picasso at Bellagio received two stars and 13 other restaurant got one star. The awards were for the food and nothing else. All other factors like cleanliness were categorized differently.
You should know that there is no way for the owner of a restaurant or a hotel to know who is an inspector for Michelin; they all travel incognito as regular customers. So, be careful, because your next client might just be there to check you out and the next day you might get a star and become worldwide famous.

Orice altceva precum curatenia a intrat in alta categorie.

Loyalty Programs
by Claudia Sonea

Airlines had the balance sheet of frequent-flier awards this year too and what do you now it was up 21 percent from last year. Normally it shouldn’t surprise anyone taking in consideration that anything that is for free is very appealing. Yet, this is not the case because airlines are trying to add tougher rules for these awards as a bonus to higher fares.
Up to now the number of miles could bring you a free trip to some exotic destination like Hawaii or anywhere else you want. Due to the economic crisis and the high fares people started to focus more on spending the extra mileage on emergency trips and visiting relatives. They prefer being loyal to an airline that has a better redemption program, but that it is very difficult to find in the context that most of them have been raising mileage requirements, shortened expiration periods and added fees if you want to cash them in. For instance, Delta increased the number of miles required for a free trip and added a fuel surcharge on reward tickets two months ago.
The main reason for the percentage going up is that the programs still seem appealing because of the business trips and also because there is still the slight chance of actually getting something for free. Continental, a major U.S. airline, has the OnePass loyalty program giving the customers to use mileage to book available seats on partner airlines and also give them the possibility to compare routes and the miles it will cost them. It is beneficial both for customers and for airliners because for the first is a way to avoid the fares and for the others is money.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Program de loialitate
by Claudia Sonea

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Plane or bus, what will it be?
by Claudia Sonea

The USA is still struggling to come back after the soaring oil price has spread like a plague infecting all its economy. The Congress approved the $700 billion bailout plan, but there are still some matters to be solved before it can be implemented, meantime all industries are trying to keep themselves afloat.
The airlines are trying to cope with the spicy price they have to pay for the fuel, but the higher prices have drifted away the passengers and the situation is worsening. As an alternative to the increases of fares they came up with deals with advertisers. Nothing new, you would say, but the difference is that if up to now there was only onboard advertisements, they are thinking to introduce them on a plane's overhead bin and even elsewhere if it brings them revenue. In Europe many airlines already use such types of advertisements, but in US airlines were reluctant and some still are to the idea of turning the airplane in a bus.
Currently you can find advertisements on the bottoms of security bins, in-flight television screens and boarding, napkins, beverages and magazines. A carrier's fleet size and demographics can influence the quantity of money an airline can get from advertisement, but it is a long-term trend. The problem remaining is whether the fuel price can actually be compensated by advertisement revenue. For now, they can only hope to help them get through this economic crisis which is considered to be the worse since the Great Depression.

by Claudia Sonea

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Union station oslavuje 100 rokov
by Martina Janeckova

New Yorská Pennsylvania station bola v roku 1964 zrovnaná so zemou. Amtrak sa snažil podporovať podobné rekonštrukčné projekty cez svoj Great American Stations program. Dnes patrí stanica k jedným z najnavštevovanejších miest vo Washingtone a ročne ňou prejde viac ako 32 miliónov ľudí.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Union station celebrates 100 years
by Martina Janeckova

Washington’s Union Station is celebrating its centennial this weekend (Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. and Sunday Oct. 5 from noon to 4 p. m.). There will be exhibition of historic locomotives and passenger cars from the bloom of rail travel, as well as modern Amtrak equipment. Visitors will also be able to buy souvenir stamps inside and old railway post office car and archival photos of the station will be displayed. David Burnham, the principal architect of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, designed the station to serve as “a monumental gateway to Washington”, said Dwight Young, who works for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The station opened in 1907, although it wasn’t completed until 1908. In the early decades, nearly everyone, including famous persons as presidents and royalty, arrived in Washington by train. But later as passengers started to prefer other means of transport, big train stations fell out of favor. New York Pennsylvania Station was razed in 1964. Union station was in decline too, with big pieces of ceiling falling off and mushrooms growing the floor. But this station survived, thanks in part to an unsuccessful project to remake the building into a national visitor’s center for the country’s bicentennial. Soon the station was closed. In 1988 it was reopened after the restoration, once again as a train station, but also with a shopping mall with luxurious shops and restaurants. Amtrak has been trying to support similar restoration projects through its Great American Stations program. Today the station is one of the Washington’s most visited sites with more than 32 million people passing through a year.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Cell phones all over
by Claudia Sonea

There are some places on this planet where cell phones or the internet cannot be used. Amazing as it may be, these places are not uninhabited or untouched by humans. For instance, Yellowstone National Park is such a place and it is under human administration, but the problem is for how long? On Tuesday, the park officials announced that they released a draft plan regarding the wireless services within the park.
Yellowstone's wireless communication plan is supposed to increase cell phone coverage in the 3,500-square-mile park. According to them the effects will be insignificants as the surrounding areas and park road corridors are forbidden to cellular towers, and they demand that larger developed areas to increase cell phone service and wireless Internet. However, one of the flaws that lead to this draft plan was that the most visited site of Yellowstone, Old Faithful geyser, had as neighbor nothing else than a cellular tower. Controversies stirred by this awkward location will be ironed out by the transfer next to a water treatment plant.
It is very encouraging to think that the places that once were meant to offer you peace and the perfect spot to contemplate and meditate will now be disturbed by rude people answering their cell phones. In spite of the courtesy politic the officials assured us of, most definitely there will be people that will not have any consideration for such things. There are pay phones along roadways inside the park, why would be there any need for cell phones? By October 31 you can express your opinion on the matter. Don’t let the technology to break through everything. Green power!

Celulare peste tot
by Claudia Sonea

Puterea verde!
