Computer glitch fixed at LAX by Notme dfsfs

A customs computer glitch occurred in the system causing numerous delays and almost 20.000 international passengers to be stranded for several hours at the Lost Angeles International Airport.The system contained information about criminals and it was used to screen passengers that enter the country and it went down at 2 PM Saturday and lasted for 10 hours but only at 4 PM Sunday official succeeded in processing the backlog of incoming passengers.U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Mike Fleming said "a computer switch failed, which knocked down the entire communications system. A backup system was in place, but it was accessible only to customs officers in some of the lanes where passengers were being processed, creating huge bottlenecks."Although the passengers were stranded in the planes for hours, they had access to food, water and bathrooms.Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa contacted Homeland Security to request an investigation and incident reports that will provide information about changes to procedures and protocols to ensure faster and more convenient processing of passengers in the event of future systems failures.Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said that the failure happened because of a malfunction on the fibre optic cables that support the system used to process international passengers.

Travelocity.com was fined by the federal regulators for booking trips between U.S. and Cuba after they violated a 45 years old embargo. It's a first time when an online travel agency is fined by the feds.They paid earlier this month about $182,750 for settling a complaint brought by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, after the agency violated prohibition almost 1500 times between January 1998 and April 2004.U.S. Treasury Department declared that Travelocity.com "provided travel-related services in which Cuba or Cuban nationals had an interest by arranging air travel and hotel reservations to, from, with or within Cuba without an OFAC license."A spokesman for Travelocity, Joel Frey said in an e-mail Wednesday that the company hasn't applied for a license and it doesn't intend to do so. He said that the trips to Cube were unintentionally permitted to be booked by consumers online because of some technical failures from several years ago and it's just now settled with OFAC."In no way did the company intend to allow bookings for trips to Cuba and the company has fully cooperated with OFAC and implemented corrective measures."The spokeswoman of U.S. Treasury, Molly Millerwise said that any individual or business that violates Cuban sanction will face criminal penalties, but she didn't specified if the investigation of Travelocity had been closed.

"It would boost our city's name recognition, and that can lead to a boost in tourism," said Murakami, the mayor. "We want a little more of an increase in foreign visitors.""We want to ask him to stop by Obama as president if he visits Japan," said Sadakazu Tsubouchi, an official at city hall. Safer school buses for children by Zuzana Blazeckova

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary E. Peters proposed on Monday new rules relate to safety of children in school buses. She wants to expand the use of shoulder belts, improve buckling up while riding, and assure safeness for all students go to school by school buses. Furthermore she brought in the project to increase the height of seat backs on all school buses from 20 inches to 24 inches. It should help to protect also taller passengers in accident, because they are more likely to flying over the seats with short backs. Peters proposed another claim but for short school buses too. That is, to start with using shoulder straps. However, these changes could be implemented as early as next year. Peters system for improving safety in school buses includes very school districts and states to make their own decision how to spend their money and to shield young students to improve safeness wile riding in school buses at the same time. She promised states can use Federal Highway Safety Money to cover the cost of installing school bus seatbelts. This innovation would probably add $10, 000 to the cost of each school bus. Public comments of the suggestion made by Mary E. Peters will be accepted for 60 days.Conclusions of statistics made by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say that the majority of injuries happen to passengers in other vehicles than buses. Moreover that every year an average 19 children are killed not exactly inside the bus, but on the contrary by getting on and off the school bus. So it is sometimes bigger risk for parents to let their children run at the bus stop or on the other side, impatiently get out of the bus after school day.

The "Smoking mountain" active again

Residents of Puebla, Mexico, became eye wittnesses of the incredible performance of Popocatepetl volcano on Saturday. "Judging by the altitude, it is the biggest smoke cloud we've seen in the past seven years," Popocatepetl Operation Plan director Ramon Pena told AFP.This snow capped stratovolcano with forested slopes created 8 km high cloud of ash and dangerously hot steam above the surrounding area, that has been dormant for years. Popocatepetl, often conveniently shortened to Popo, is currently the highst active volcano in the Northern Hemisphere. The name Popocatepetl, meaning "Smoking Mountain", was given to the volcano by the Aztecs, and suggests that the volcano has long been active. Accurate knowledge of Popo's activity reaches back to the first days of Spanish conquest. In historical time, about 30 eruptions have been reported, although documentation is poor. Most historical eruptions were apparently restricted to moderate Vulcanian steam and ash emission. On December 21, 1994, it awakened from dormancy and continues to be active today. In 1996, it killed five climbers at the crater rim by an explosion. This amazing show created little danger for people living on the flanks of the volcano, which separates Mexico and Puebla Valleys, both with more than 20 million inhabitants. However, according to the expert observer, this eruption has not changed the yellow alert, that signals no risk.

Yes, this is not a joke. You can really become a part of a Trafalgar Square. If you feel like you are supposed to be the right one, watch out the competition that is being run by London officials in effort to fill the empty "fourth plinth". It is an Antony Gormley's concept that proposes that there is no use for stone, granite, bronze or an experienced hand of the sculptor. All he needs is a myriad of people staring at the plinth willing to go "onstage" and be an one-hour-statue. And it has even a deeper meaning & it means that you are in individualist we all have to honor. The trouble is whether the weather would be willing to colaborate so he can find some potential statues.And there are five another problems. Another sculptures, projects, designs that were short listed. For example the remains of a civilians vehicle that has been destroyed during an attack in Iraq. And the author is even not trying to pretend that that is an artwork.Well, if you feel like you need a little bit of love you should pray Tracey Emin's work will win. The Meerkats, small mammals living toghether in desert are designed to be a part of fourth plinth as they are a symbol of unity and safety (and one may ask what happened to woman that created "Everyone I Have Ever Slept With" tent?!). Actually, there are some more artworks & mirrors that "brings the clouds down to the ground" and illuminated peace sign that is powered by wind and the sun. After all this, the replica of Nelson's ship in a bottle just seems to be incredibly corny.If you are not interested in being a statue, but you would like to join next year competition & what about exposing empty fourth plinth and calling it "Empty Fourth Plinth"?

High-speed trains are changing Europe

There are new possibilities of traveling in Europe using high-speed trains in more and more European places. Traveling by these new comfortably equipped and perfectly working trains can compete with flying by planes, special in the areas where using planes is useless for such a short distance. Paris, London, Brussels and Amsterdam are such a popular European destinations so close to use planes but it can appear very far to use slow and unpalatable trains. This is the past of course, since the high-speed Eurostar trains provide services on this tracks.Sitting in nicely tapestried huge soft seat with possibility of getting coffee, tea or other warm or cold drinks from the bar offer or little snack is making your visit on the board even more attractive. As these trains are mainly used by all kinds of businessmen, the air-conditioned carriages offer Internet connection and daily papers from the countries the train goes through. They were well-prepared to Thanksgiving this year. They couldn't make a mistake, but the possibility to have some problems at the airport is always here. It is not so simple to prepare such a big service as airport really is. It is impossible to prepare everything so well that there is no possibility to fail. But they are always trying and make their precautions more than good. So Thanksgiving means a lot of problems for all American airports every year. How would it be this year? We can say nothing yet. Most of the people already made their first flight. Some of them also the second, the third, ... Traveling by plane is the fastest possibility how to reach your friends living in another city, country, or even on the other side of the planet. It became a standard way of transport. But what people forget about again and again are the rules and the conditions of boarding.Bizarre stuff is confiscated on the airports every day. For example two-headed snake, collection of crabs, human eyeballs, guns imitations, belt with fake-bullets and others. It is not easy to surprise the screeners, they seems to be quite used to it. Archives of the airport screeners could tell you about even more bizarre examples.You should be careful about the content of your bags especially when you are traveling during big feasts. In these days are airports crowded of hasting people. Would be great to check the terms and conditions of your travel agency before the flight, otherwise you might leave your Christmas gifts on the airport and never get them back again.It is true and really appreciated by some busy travelers, that several airports offer payed sending service. So, if the employer of the airport catch you with some unacceptable stuff in your pocket, ask him to send it to you by post. Or try to manage it before the flight. Flying agencies are able to accept some unusual parcels and transport them when it is planned in advance.If you passed the control without any obstacles, please, take a seat! This week almost every family in the United States is going crazy. One of their most favourite holiday is coming. Thanksgiving.They are home with their families, watching TV, playing games, and what is very important & eating good meals.Their specialty is definitely thanksgiving turkey. 5.32 millions turkeys are killed every year, just to be dinner for American families. Can you imagine how many it is? They are sold on every corner of every street, and you have to hurry up to pick up the right one for you. But every year there are some lucky turkeys. There is a special ceremony in the White House, where the President of the United States gives presidential pardon to these two lucky turkeys. After this ceremony are the turkeys taken to farm, where they can live happily until the end of their natural life. They even have names. They were usually sent to big farm in state Virginia, but since 2005 they are sent to Disneyland in California or in Florida. So if you want to see these animal celebrities just go thereIt is not sure why was this ceremony found. First president who gave the pardon was the president Truman in 1947. Maybe he just liked animals or wanted to be popular. But it was really nice decision and I think other animals should get this pardon too.

Ireland has registered the highest annual number of tourists in entire history. Seamus Brennan, a Tourism Minister said: "As we approach the end of 2007, all the indications are that we will enjoy another record year for Irish tourism." Ireland is visited mostly by tourists from the central Europe, neighboring Britain, and the visitors from The United States. Though the neighboring Britain slightly decreased a number of incoming tourists, other countries have increased the number of visitors. The number of tourists was increased by 4.0 percent as for the comparization to the last year's tourism. Even if the number of visitors from the Britain decreased to 3.46 million, the number of people coming from Europe thumbed to 2.23 million. The number of American visitors jumped nearly to 1,000,000 people. Ireland experienced a tourist record this year. About 9,000,000 people have visited Ireland this year. Some came because of the job opportunities and others just for fun to do some sightseeing and have nice memories. Ireland was pleased especially about the American tourists, because they usually stayed longer, hired a car, traveled across the Ireland and spent more money. Could the competition of the two Ireland's biggest airlines cause this strong surge of tourists? The Ryanair has extremely extended direct links from Ireland to various European destinations as well as the other biggest airlines Aer Lingus. There is a high probability that tourists were driven by different flight opportunities in choosing their holiday destination. The Ministry of Tourism in Ireland plans to spend a $73 million on marketing. Mr. Seamus Brennan would like to promote Ireland overseas as a tourist destination.

Tragical air accidents. Zuzana Valkova

Everyone thinks that flying is the safest way of traveling. Everyday there are thousands accidents on the ground. Every year is killed over million of people in car accidents. Planes are crashing only time to time. That is not stimulative, but better than nothing. When you are traveling by plane, it is 10 times safer than driving your car; it is almost as safe as sitting in the pub with your friends. Numbers don't lie. Flying is safer. But there were many really big plane accidents in the past, and I wanted to know which one was the worst.The biggest collision took a place on beautiful island Tenerife. In 1977 two Boeings crashed on the runway, when KLM Airways plane was taking off and Pan American plane was taxiing. This accident killed 583 people.Second biggest crash was flight of the Japan Airlines Boeing in 1985. After structural failure and loosing most of the hydraulic control, the plane crashed into the mountain. 520 people died and 4 survived. Third one was mid air collision of two planes, one of the Saudi Arabian Airlines and the second one of the Air Kazakhstan. The crash happened over the small village in India in 1996. This day died 349 people from both planes.346 people died in the fourth biggest accident in the history. McDonnell Douglas plane exploded shortly after taking off from Paris in 1974. There were many accidents like this in history. I know they look terrible. At one time are killed so many people. But these kinds of accidents are not happening everyday. Car accidents are.

A holiday to remember Claudia Sonea

This year China seduced many tourists in spending their holiday in the tiny gambling enclave of Macau, a territory that was under Portuguese ownership until 1999 when it was returned to China. However the choice proved to be one of the worst and ended with a riot against tour guides and even against the police. Around 2.4 million tourists traveled to Macau since October and nearly half of them were from mainland China, according to government figures. The points of attraction are easy to be seen due to the fact that big-name U.S. casino operators such as Las Vegas resort owners Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn develop the retail and gambling industry. Moreover, Macau combines European heritage (Portuguese language and several U.N.-declared World Heritage sites) and Chinese culture. Everyone that decided to spend the holiday there has suffered a tremendous shock, but the blame falls on both sides: tourists have been too aggressive and the police shouldn't have used force to calm down spirits. The conflict was created because the local guides took the tourists to see too many shops and they missed the purpose of their visit: the historical sites in the territory. It seems a problem of communication that should have been solved diplomatically by the two sides involved, nevertheless police officers were sent to deal with the matter which involved more than 100 tourists, according to police spokesman Pun Siu-tong. The tourists did not receive the peacemakers very well and injured one officer after which they surrounded the police car preventing them from leaving. In consequence more than 40 police armed with riot gear and batons were then dispatched to handle the situation, said Pun busting the rumors that the police were from Macau's riot squad.
