The "Smoking mountain" active again Zuzana Moravcova

Residents of Puebla, Mexico, became eye wittnesses of the incredible performance of Popocatepetl volcano on Saturday. "Judging by the altitude, it is the biggest smoke cloud we've seen in the past seven years," Popocatepetl Operation Plan director Ramon Pena told AFP.This snow capped stratovolcano with forested slopes created 8 km high cloud of ash and dangerously hot steam above the surrounding area, that has been dormant for years. Popocatepetl, often conveniently shortened to Popo, is currently the highst active volcano in the Northern Hemisphere. The name Popocatepetl, meaning "Smoking Mountain", was given to the volcano by the Aztecs, and suggests that the volcano has long been active. Accurate knowledge of Popo's activity reaches back to the first days of Spanish conquest. In historical time, about 30 eruptions have been reported, although documentation is poor. Most historical eruptions were apparently restricted to moderate Vulcanian steam and ash emission. On December 21, 1994, it awakened from dormancy and continues to be active today. In 1996, it killed five climbers at the crater rim by an explosion. This amazing show created little danger for people living on the flanks of the volcano, which separates Mexico and Puebla Valleys, both with more than 20 million inhabitants. However, according to the expert observer, this eruption has not changed the yellow alert, that signals no risk.
