Broadway Boulevard
by Claudia Sonea
The planet is like our own house, if you don’t take care of it, it will fall down on us. People should be more and more aware of the dangers that pollutions represents. Few people in leading positions actually think about ecology and this important aspect. The Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, is one of the and cheers to his efforts.
Having a great vision, Bloomberg is moving at a slow pace towards its fulfilling and the Broadway Boulevard is part of the plan. He wants to reduce New Yorks’ traffic pollution and search for other alternatives to cars. As it is, Broadway Boulevard will be an esplanade starting from 42nd Street eight blocks south to the busy shopping district of Herald Square and joined by a pedestrian walkway with cafe tables and umbrellas. The project costs $700000 and is materialized by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District together with the city's Department of Transportation and they hired even a consultant, Jan Gehl, urban designer from Copenhagen.
There is no sure date for when the esplanade will be ready to use, but it is expected somewhere mid-August. This should encourage bike riding and walking that are good not only for the environment, but also for health. Realizing the importance of a safe world and that by saving the planet we save ourselves, even New York transportation officials are considering alternatives to cars. Bravo, but if they only manage to set an example by giving up the comfort of their own cars, the project would be complete.
