China was in the center of the attention this year and that due to the fact that the Olympic Games were awarded to it. The fact that is the country host of the Olympics is not the only reason for such a fuss over the country. Actually, by hosting the Games China’s flaws become a matter of interest therefore protesters found the best mean to express their malcontents.
Up to this point the Olympic torch was boycotted as a sign of protest against the crackdown in Tibet, the pollution and other similar reasons. After on May 12, 2008, China was hit by a terrible earthquake and the government showed such an understanding and promptitude in their rescue actions people’s mentality changed and China become an ally in their prayers to God.
Now, all that interest is the good part about the country. So the latest piece of good news is that Beijing will fulfill its promise to reduce vehicle circulation starting this Sunday. Two new subway lines and a new rail line have just been finished and will be in use serving millions of passengers, according to Zhou Zhengyu, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Committee of Communications. The Olympics will open in about three weeks and Beijing's intense traffic represented an issue, thus the new locomotion means will keep about half of Beijing's vehicles off the road during the Olympics. As privileged guests of the Olympics you’ll have two subway lines at your disposal, while the new rail line links the Airport Line to Beijing's central business district.
Although the changes are not so big, it sure represents an evidence of the importance that the Chinese government gives to the Olympics. All critics of Jacques Rogge will have to bite their tongue. Will British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and German Chancellor Angela Merkel change their minds and actually attend the Games? Don’t go away, more to come…
