165 safe after plane explodes in Japan Notme

A plane with 157 passengers from China Airlines exploded Monday on the airport of Naha, the capital of Okinawa, at 10:27 a.m. local time. The plane departed from Taipei and was heading to China. When the plane, a Boeing 737-800 jetline landed on Naha, passengers said that the left engine began smoking, followed by the right one.Japanese Transport Ministry official Akihiko Tamura declared: "Okinawa Airport traffic controllers had received no report from the pilot indicating anything was wrong as the plane came in to land and even as it stopped near the terminal to unload passengers."All the 157 passengers were evacuated through the emergency slides and none of them or the crew was injured. But two of the passengers a young girl of 7 and a 57 year old man were taken to a hospital after they said they felt unwell after being evacuated. The cause of fire is still unknown, but any terrorist attacks have been denied by the Japanese officials. A spokesman for China Airlines, Sun Hung-wen said: "the plane landed safely so we are still checking why there was a fire." A Boeing investigator is expected to arrive in Japan by Wednesday and according to spokesman Ted Lopatkiewicz, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board will send two investigators to Japan.

The Great Wall of China is disappearing due to neglect Corina Ciubotaru

The Great Wall of China, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, is slowly fading away. It's the only man made structure that can be seen for space but the wind has eroded it so much that entire miles of it are now gone. In the regions where mud was used as primary building material, made during the Han dynasty, winds carried it away and gave birth to the greatest sandstorms in the country. Lookout towers have disappeared completely too and local authorities can do nothing much about it. The soil has eroded in the region due to massive agricultural exploitation and the only way to stop heavy winds would be to plant trees around the Wall. Large portions of it are being covered in mud, which buys more time for people trying desperately to find a solution. Locals have been using it in non-orthodox ways too; some have taken bits of it to use in pigsties, while a local mining company made a hole through it so the trucks can get through easier and built houses for workers using bricks from the Wall. The Great Wall is being visited by more than 10 million people every year and its loss would be a disaster not only for China, but to the entire cultural world. It's lasted for more than 2,000 years and it would be a shame if it wasn't saved. It's on top of the list of most endangered architectural sites and the Chinese government is just beginning to do something about that, tripling its budget for conservation of monuments.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Twin storms pack dangerous winds Notme

Tuesday September 4 was a record day, but not a good one. It was for the first time when two hurricanes of great intensity have made landfall in the same season on Latin America, with Hurricane Felix forming just two weeks after Hurricane Dean."Since our records began in the late 19th century, we have no record of two land-falling category five hurricanes in the same season," said Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen of the National Hurricane Center in Miami. "Nor do we have any record of the first two hurricanes of the same season developing into category five hurricanes."The two hurricanes, Felix and Henriette have been categorized as hurricanes of Category 5. Felix hit the Central America while Henriette was slamming in Mexico's Baja California peninsula. The Honduran government had to evacuate almost 10.000 people from high risk area before Felix arrived. At 5 p.m. EDT, Felix's center was 110 miles west of Puerto Cabezas, heading westwards at nearly 14 mph toward Honduras.Felix could dump up to 25 inches of rain in these mountainous areas, which could "produce life-threatening flash floods and mud slides," the National Hurricane Center warned.Yesterday at 5 p.m. Henriette's eye was 25 miles inland over the Baja area, threatening Mexico's northern deserts and it might even rain on Arizona and New Mexico in the Southwest on Thursday night.

Feds fine Travelocity.com for Cuba trips
by Notme dfsfs

Travelocity.com was fined by the federal regulators for booking trips between U.S. and Cuba after they violated a 45 years old embargo. It's a first time when an online travel agency is fined by the feds. They paid earlier this month about $182,750 for settling a complaint brought by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, after the agency violated prohibition almost 1500 times between January 1998 and April 2004.U.S. Treasury Department declared that Travelocity.com "provided travel-related services in which Cuba or Cuban nationals had an interest by arranging air travel and hotel reservations to, from, with or within Cuba without an OFAC license."A spokesman for Travelocity, Joel Frey said in an e-mail Wednesday that the company hasn't applied for a license and it doesn't intend to do so. He said that the trips to Cube were unintentionally permitted to be booked by consumers online because of some technical failures from several years ago and it's just now settled with OFAC."In no way did the company intend to allow bookings for trips to Cuba and the company has fully cooperated with OFAC and implemented corrective measures."The spokeswoman of U.S. Treasury, Molly Millerwise said that any individual or business that violates Cuban sanction will face criminal penalties, but she didn't specified if the investigation of Travelocity had been closed.

Severe weather hits New York
by Notme dfsfs

Severe weather paralyzed New York at rush hour. A torrential rain and a tornado crippled New York's subway system, highway tunnels and causing delays at Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia airports, all this happening Wednesday morning.By rush hour the pumping stations from the subway were overwhelmed thousands of commuters stranded for hours. The National Weather Service reported that a mass of tropical air dumped an extraordinary amount of rain in a short period of time. The worst was recorded between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., with 2.5 inches falling on Central Park and almost 3.5 on Kennedy International Airport. The tornado from Brooklyn killed a woman trapped in her car that was hit by another vehicle. More than 70 buildings were damaged, 20 of them so badly they were deemed uninhabitable. In Brooklyn's Sunset Park, houses of raw brick were left without roofs, and a car dealership in Bay Ridge, along with 100-year-old trees snapped at their roots.Mayor Michael Bloomberg remarked, "I don't know that God had rush hour in mind when the storms hit."After the storm the Metropolitan Transportation Authority continued to fight with the water, commuters were still stranded and brought criticism from city officials. The storm took us by surprise because it was not predicted by the National Weather Service," said MTA Chairman Elliot "Lee" Sander.

You have to see Yellowstone park
by Corina Ciubotaru

American wildlife is getting more and more accustomed to humans lately, it seems. Yellowstone has been receiving almost 10% more visitors this year than the same period in 2006, as construction work at East Entrance is over and doesn't require closing the park at night. The park, a favored destination for those passionate by winter sports, has had some problems with snowmobile regulation in the past, but it seems they are over this year as officials found the best solution to please both tourists and environmental activists. You can still take a ride in a snowmobile or snowcoach and take pictures of deer and birds or the spectacular geysers blowing up steam. Flowers and warm weather in the summer and gorgeous natural colors in the fall add up to a visit you certainly won't forget, no matter when you decide to come. It is probably the experience of a lifetime since there aren't many places left in the world where such beauty still exists. For those who can't get enough of the great outdoors and Yellowstone in particular, there's news that a man in selling his house in the West Yellowstone region for an undisclosed price. The home comes equipped with its own helipad and it overlooks Duck Creek Pond, it has six bedrooms and a guest house of three bedrooms and it just might be the thing for you if you've always wondered what nature life is all about. The owner, who now lives in Texas because of warmer days, runs a wildlife center that protects bears and wolves.

Will Obama visit the Town of Obama?
by Zuzana Moravcova

On a snowy west coast of Japan, 250 miles west of Tokyo, there is a small town that would evoke curiosity among voters for U.S. president - a town of Obama. The Japanese word Obama means "Little Beach". Though, it is just a coincidence, and is nothing to do with the candidate. But Japanese leaders in Obama are obviously honored or even proud of carrying the name of potential U.S. president. To be exact, they are therefore planning to help Barrack Obama win the presidential election, because it would enhance the town's profile far beyond the borders of Japan. "It would boost our city's name recognition, and that can lead to a boost in tourism," said Murakami, the mayor. "We want a little more of an increase in foreign visitors.""We want to ask him to stop by Obama as president if he visits Japan," said Sadakazu Tsubouchi, an official at city hall. Barack Obama yet does not seem to be interested in helping a Japanese town of 32,000 inhabitants rise their tourism, well, he has definitely more important things to sort out concerning his already exhausting presidential campaign. However, Obama's Japanese followers are about to carry on with their support, as they expect the group to be growing. Seiji Fujihara, the group's secretary general, said they would gather to watch the results of the March 4 primary voting,"If Mr. Obama becomes the president, we will form a delegation and try to visit him at the White House. That would be awesome."

Computer glitch fixed at LAX
by Notme dfsfs

A customs computer glitch occurred in the system causing numerous delays and almost 20.000 international passengers to be stranded for several hours at the Lost Angeles International Airport. The system contained information about criminals and it was used to screen passengers that enter the country and it went down at 2 PM Saturday and lasted for 10 hours but only at 4 PM Sunday official succeeded in processing the backlog of incoming passengers.U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Mike Fleming said "a computer switch failed, which knocked down the entire communications system. A backup system was in place, but it was accessible only to customs officers in some of the lanes where passengers were being processed, creating huge bottlenecks."Although the passengers were stranded in the planes for hours, they had access to food, water and bathrooms.Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa contacted Homeland Security to request an investigation and incident reports that will provide information about changes to procedures and protocols to ensure faster and more convenient processing of passengers in the event of future systems failures.Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said that the failure happened because of a malfunction on the fibre optic cables that support the system used to process international passengers.

Virgin Atlantic reducing CO2
by Lenka Filipova

Virgin Aircraft has performed the first flight ever where the commercial airplane was fueled with environmentally friendly biofuel. The experiment flight was provided form London to Amsterdam. It fetched a zeal to show that using this kind of fuel can abate the carbon dioxide produced by common jet aircrafts. This fuel consisted of mixture of coconut and babassu oil in one of four main fuel tanks. The pilots and technicians were present on the board, but the plane carried no passengers. There were discussions over the test flight as it was seen from several points of views. There was an approval on one side, claiming that the attempt could bring an essential virtue in connection to knowledge of reduction of carbon dioxide footprint. On the other side, there were some resolutions passed as the scientists are still faltering the benefits of biofuels to environment. The airline's president Sir Richard Branson expects this advancement to be carried out even sooner than it has been awaited. In addition to this, the company aims to change the way of landing as well as develop such engines which will burn fuel much slowlier.Even the airlines analysts appreciate the Branson's effort to invest billions into the ambition to reduce the aviation impact on climate. In spite of the fact that biofuels produce certainly much CO2 than common jet fuels, it will take some time to make an exact analysis of this flight. As aviation has enormous effects on global worming and global dimming by dust and gases emissions blocking the sunbeams to penetrate through this, it is at least of some appreciation that such experiments are carried out.

Smooth Flight
by Kamila Moravcikova

I have never in my whole life flown during the winter. And I have to thank for that as I am pretty sure that such a situation would necessarily lead to my complete nervous breakdown. Winter means cold and snowing. Snowing means snow on runway. And snow on the runaway is just highway to hell. The hell means delays (in better case) or cancellation (in the worse one), missing connection flight, luggage that you probably not gonna see ever again, mad passengers and nervous and blamed airline and airport employees even though they are not the ones who can influence the weather (but it much more effective to shout out loud all your anger to the face of innocent flying attendant than to the the apparently careless skies above). And I don't want to think about all the danger that goes together with unfavorable weather. Or maybe I'm just little too negative? But if you were in my shoes, with my experiences, I bet you wouldn't find many things you could be positive about. I went through really dreadful flight once. The whole plane was shaking, all I can remember is me just focused on breathing, trying to persuade myself I was doing fine, the children in a seat ahead crying and crying. I also went through the whole cancellation of my flight because of broken landing gear and unbelievable delay caused by the baby diaper stuck in lavatory. I can remember waiting 30 hours for the next flight, sitting at airport and trying to kill the endless time somehow. I can recall running through the whole airport, all sweat and exhausted just to hear I was too late. And I can never forget the desperate minutes at baggage claim. And all this happened in summer. That's why I'm sure I would hardly handle the winter flight.

Tourism is a reason of fights
by Jana Passova

Hawaiian people are not satisfied with the way of tourism progress. Tourism grows up here into industry. The state's biggest industry. Living in 24/7 resort causes some negatives which are noisy neighbors, increasing prices of home and rental costs and destroy the traditional community sense. These new people change everyday. There is no time for knowing them better. They do not join activities of Hawaiian people. The parts as Oahu, Maui and Kauai became places of two parts. One of them is for short-term rental suits the other one is against them. People who run the bed and breakfast or other type of short-term housing say it is not because it help them get rich. It is a way how to pay mortgages or other bills. Many of them have never had a problem with noise and their guests always use to keep house rules. Problems of owners and neighbors grew up into confrontations and lawsuits. The situation is really complicated, because people do not want to fight with own neighbors or lure away tourists, but on the other side they want to live quiet life. Bed and breakfast are only a small part of tourism in Hawaii. The biggest one are hotels. There are available about 73.000 units prepared for visitors. Another problem is with illegal rental suits. There were found more than 4.000 illegal short-term units in most frequented parts of Hawaii in 2005. Bed and breakfast suites are very popular because of their low price. They are available from 80 dollars per night until in a hotel tourists have to pay nearly 200 dollars per night. But there should be completely another situation in close future. All three areas are going to change the way of getting permits for short-term rental suits and bed and breakfast rooms. Owners will be not able to run their business outside of certain resort areas and if they run their business outside a residential districts, they will have to pay nearly quadruple taxes like an equivalent to a hotel rate.

Disney gets safer
by Claudia Sonea

Everyone's dream is to get at least once in their life at the Walt Disney World Resort, even for the inner children of the adults. There are so many attractions that only a day spent in the entertainment park would not suffice. An attraction that really gets people' attention is the Primeval Whirl at Disney's Animal Kingdom, a roller coaster bought from Reverchon and that has cars spinning in circles while traveling on tracks, thus the ride is extremely different each time. Why it is so different from the others? It is due to the tragic incident that took place on 29 November 2007. Karen Price, a Disney Cast Member, died at the age of 63 in a Florida hospital after was hit by one of the cars of Primeval Whirl and fell from the platform. According to park officials and Orange County authorities she hit her head in the fall and that lead to her death. Nevertheless her death is still being investigated by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Disney World spokeswoman Kim Prunty stated on Wednesday that due to the incident the entry and exit areas of Primeval Whirl will be renewed with sensor mats in restricted-access areas, they will extend the platform and add bold stripes to the load and unload zones, In case a person sets foot in that area the role of the sensor mats will be to shut down the ride. The state registered nine deaths reported by Disney from 2001. The question that pops-up in everyone's minds right now is if indeed their dream is a good one and if indeed, Disney is assuring their safety or the events are just the results of hazard.

Less air travel delays
by Claudia Sonea

In December last year, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey came up with a 100 recommendations plan to solve the flight delays issue that congested air traffic of three major US airports (LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports). The report had 32 pages and 27 of the suggestions could deal with the matter by this summer, if they were implemented. All the suggestions were made by keeping in count the rising traffic at the airports and although they are not amazing all by themselves together would create a capacity of 3.5 million of additional passengers. Among the recommendations were express flight paths for the routes from New York to Washington that would ease these congested routes, extra air traffic controllers and even some actions available for the controllers that however are not that safe. On the other hand Federal officials would rather incline for reducing the number of hourly flights and if airports will not do it they are thinking to impose it to them. U.S. Department of Transportation has got involved too and formed its committee on New York-area flight delays due to the fact that airports in NY area create three-quarters of US flight delays. President Bush was also intrigued by the congestion formed around NY and requested in September for urgent measures in order to not aggravate the situation of the country's air travel network. Nevertheless spokesman Brian Turmail, Department of Transportation, stated on Thursday that in spite of better operations at the airport the situation may worsen as a consequence of an increase in flights forecasted for next year and for which he suggests congestion pricing that would charge higher user fees for flights during peak hours. In the report these suggestions did not appear. What will happen next? Customers might sense the feedback on their pocket and the expenses of all improvements will be found in the ticket's price. Bush gave them a term and hopefully measures will be taken sooner and not later. Don't go away, more to come.

DayJet wants to make travel easier

DayJet, a startup airline that will use a new line of "very light jets" is scheduled to launch late August or early September. The company hopes its business model of "on demand" executive air travel will become popular rapidly and expand elsewhere.Voices say it's a very long road from an excellent idea to an excellent idea that works. We'll let time and future clients decide this one.Till the let's take a look at what "on demand" air travel could mean for us all.Let's assume you're flying for an important business meeting in a small town in Florida. You stand in that long security line in Fort Lauderdale or Miami, then switch to a commuter plane in Orlando or even worst in Atlanta and you have to book a room at some crummy hotel because nothing is flying till the next morning.Another alternative would be losing some good hours of your life and drive to your destination or losing some good money from your wallet and use a very expensive charter plane.DayJet will offer flights to cities where air service is lacking and places that traditionally have been driving destinations. You'll be able to get to Lakeland from Boca Raton in about 35 minutes, compared to three hours of driving. We just have to wait for them to open, check their prices and perhaps simplify our lives a little if the concept will work.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Higher oil prices caused higher air fares
by Nina Gotzmannova

Rising prices of crude oil are making wrinkles not only on the faces of economist, analytics and businesspeople. The indirect impact can feel for example airlines customers. Several airlines had increased the prices of air fare because of the increasing price of oil, the basic fuel for planes. The first airline to do this step was American Airlines. The company raised the prices up to $ 20 for a round-trip ticket. The largest airline in the world counting passengers-miles transported stated that this step was necessary due to rising price of crude oil and they need to recover some of the costs. Fuel is the biggest amount of list of airlines expenses, other items such as food for customers or other services are no way near so expensive as the fuel is.Other airlines, such as Delta Air Lines or Alaska Airlines, continued. The prices are higher in every flight in the 48 contiguous states. But this increasing is not the first one. Since Labor Day there have been seven fare raisings, but this one is the most noticeable. But the airlines have really serious economical reasons for this step. According to Air Transport Association, the main trade group, the fuel prices rose to record highs. Tor the second quarter the costs of fuel were 5.6 percent higher, what is more than twice comparing with the rate during the same period last year. The price of oil itself rose up to 25 percent since Labor Day. Economy proved that it is a real living organism connected with all aspect of life, and no one can be unaffected.

Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Planes beware, high speed trains are the future of America's transport
by Corina Ciubotaru

Oil prices are on the rise, things need to be done fast, streets are jammed and the planet is becoming ever more polluted. What better way to fight all this than changing our means of transport? Even though it gets little funding and has never made a profit, Amtrak is set to provide a solution to the transport problem through high-speed trains. A standard today in some European countries like France and also in other parts of the world, i.e. Japan, the high-speed train capable of exceeding 125 miles per hour is still a rare sight in America. An ambitious project to link San Francisco and Sacramento to Los Angeles and San Diego is likely to be accepted by the general public after being rejected twice and might spark a nationwide revolution if more and more states adopt the idea. Current day trains are slow and have delays in almost one third of all rides, but ridership is on the rise as passengers prefer to spend less money and not be stuck in a traffic jam even though the trip takes longer. Some Amtrak lines are sponsored only by the state they run in and the company itself has $3.3 billion in debt even though it's constantly breaking its own records in terms of customer numbers. Between October 2006 and March 2007, the number of passengers was over 14.3 million, while the total in the last fiscal year numbered 24.3 million. Looks like a bright future ahead for trains in America, even though we shouldn't worry about planes and cars just yet.

People of the Web: Playing Chicken
by Notme dfsfs

Jason Atkins the owner of Web network, ToughSportsLive.com is caught among advocated of animal rights and amateurs of various cultural sporting events from around the world. On his network is featured cockfighting live from Puerto Rico where is legal, but in U.S. is banned in all 50 states.Atkins said: "Our ultimate goal is to be a cultural website. To produce and show the world's various cultural sporting events."On the site you can also see bare knuckles, no rules Brazilian jujitsu matches dubbed "Rio Heroes," and a show about he says that it's made for America "Girls and Guns" in which women are in bikinis and high heeled boots accessorized with dangerous weapons. The site has a documentary in English where you can find out that the battle will be held in the oldest ring of cockfighting and about the famous fans of this "sport" George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. But the Human Society oppose to Atkins saying in a statement: "The fact that animal fighting is permitted in other jurisdictions does not give anyone the Constitutional right to peddle animal fighting videos.""I would say [cockfighting is] essentially no different from the crush videos, except this is even more exploitative because it involves gambling," says Bruce Wieland an official from Las Angeles PETA. "Essentially as far as the animal is concerned it's the same deadly result."

Beijing shows off new, expensive airport
by Notme dfsfs

The world biggest airport will soon open in February 2008. The airport is in Beijing and it was build for impressing visitors in China's capital for the 2008 Olympics. The airport is designed to resemble with a Chinese dragon and its structural plan is homage to the architectural marvel that is the Forbidden City.Thursday it was opened for the first time for cameras and officials released statistics. The new terminal will have 10,600,000 square feet, or 244 acres, or 235 football pitches and will be even bigger than London's Heathrow, bigger than the Pentagon and a bit smaller than the Aalsmeer flower auction house in Amsterdam, currently the world's biggest building, with a cost for building of $2.8 billion. It would handle 48 million passengers a year and by 2012 it is expected to handle 90 million passengers. The building was designed by the British architect Norman Foster and it will have red columns with gold roof to evoke Beijing's imperial palaces and temples from the Forbidden City. A new baggage system designed by Siemens AG for $250 million will handle 19.000 pieces of luggage an hour."We are now planning a second airport," said Zhang Zhigong, the general manager. "We expect to start work on that in 2010."

Motorcycling can be a dangerous hobby
by Nina Gotzmannova

Since the traveling has appealed more people than ever, they are constantly looking for a way how to make it even better. The unconventional means of transport are still more and more popular and there's nothing more interesting or romantic than a motorcycle.Motorcycle riders are not Hell's Angels anymore. Virtually everyone can own a motorcycle and the smallest one, called "moped" can be in most countries ridden by age 16. Scooters, motorcycles with smaller wheels, are popular in Europe and in the sixties no one could be caught without his or her Vespa. But this hobby can be more dangerous than anyone can think. In U. S. doesn't exist law forcing the motorcycle riders to wear a proper helmet. The number of deaths caused by not wearing a head protection is rising the ninth straight year. National Transportation Safety Board has approved the motorcycle safety recommendations, but since they are only recommendations, a stronger federal law is needed. According to NTSB numbers riders without helmet are three times more likely to suffer a serious brain injury in a crash accident than those who are wearing a head protection. This effort has stirred the motorcycle right groups, who object to the new law and suggest rider education program instead. Nowadays only 20 states required riders to wear a helmet and three states have no helmet laws. In 1970 every state required its riders to wear a protective helmet. It may be nice to ride a motorcycle while the sun is setting and hair is blowing in the wind. But it may be safer rather to wear a helmet.

Thai plane crash: Survivors' stories
by Notme dfsfs

The official death toll of the plane that crashed Sunday in Phuket is 89. The Public Health Ministry announced that 38 survivors of the flight are now safe from harm and described their conditions as "stable" and other six will remain in the intensive care unit.Survivors speak with horror about the moments that passed and almost got them killed. Robert Borland remembers how he stood on the jet's floor with his trousers aflame: "Everything was upside down, or at least it felt that way," said Borland, recalling the screaming and fire. "My clothes caught fire, my trousers." One man dressed in a yellow shirt managed to pull him to a safety spot on the wing. Most of the dead passengers were found trapped to their seats, either knocked unconscious by the impact of the failed landing, suffocated by noxious fumes, or consumed by the flames that quickly spread through the plane.A young waitress from Prince George, British Columbia Mildred Anne Furlong said that the smoke was everywhere and flames were where the cabin used to be. She remembers that a man kicked the emergency exit until it opened, saving a lot of the people from the plane. "If it wasn't for him, nobody would have got out," Mildred said.

Aviation passengers would have a new bill of rights
by Nina Gotzmannova

People whose flight has been delayed due to bad weather or other non-predictable conditions will have more rights than before, according to a new aviation bill approved by the House of Representatives. This comfort will cost more, but the most necessary is providing comfort for traveling public. Federal Aviation Administration should receive a $68 billion to cover all expenses of investing in airport improvements. Airlines and airports will be providing food, beverages, additional restrooms or medicine for passengers, whose flight has been delayed. They will be also allowed to deplane, which is highly unusual today. If the airlines wouldn't follow the act, they may face a high fine. The act is also editing several other things, such as advancing the retirement age of pilots or increasing the number of aviation safety inspectors. The only problem is the White House. There are several things they didn't like and therefore there is a possibility the bill would be vetoed. The most important thing that should be changed is raising aviation fuel taxes. Noncommercial planes used to pay the tax of 21.8 cents per gallon of jet fuel; the aviation gasoline tax was 19.3 cents. The new prices should be 30.7 cents for noncommercial planes; gasoline tax is increased to 24.1 cents. The result is that airports will charge the passengers more than in the past. The new act will also help to modernize air traffic control system. It would be upgraded to satellite-positioning one instead the old ones, which are used since 1950.

The historical tree
by Claudia Sonea

Everyone read or at least heard about the Diary of Anne Frank, a book that holds the memory of a Jewish teenager from the World War II. In the book it is often mentioned a chestnut tree that used to comfort her while she was hiding from the Nazis. The 150-year-old chestnut is due to be cut down on November 21, because it is too diseased to be saved, according to the statement of the city officials on Tuesday. During the 25 months Anne was forced to stay indoors, in a canal-side warehouse, and the only things she could see and make her happy were the chestnut tree, the blue sky, the seagulls and other birds that glided on the wind. She stayed in obscurity for 25 months before the Nazis eventually caught her in August 1944. The tree, however, suffers from fungus and moths that have caused more than half its trunk to rot and endangers the "secret annex" atop the canal-side warehouse and represents a threat to people's safety. It has indeed a historical significance and emotional connotations, but in this context has to be cut down for which the city council released a license in March. It is integrated in the Anne Frank Museum, where the tiny apartment has been preserved and the Netherlands' Tree Institute is trying to save it. They received a postpone in October in order to investigate ways to heal it, but the city of Amsterdam can no longer wait because only 28 percent of the root is healthy and they cannot risk the 27-ton tree to fall over. They will replace it in the museum with a sapling from the original and it will forever be remembered by those that read the diary and those that visit the museum. It's a pity to be cut, but it would be worst for others.

Traveling to Christmas? Something for you...
by Ivana Bruderova

As a Christmas time is still closer, thousands of people are preparing to travel. Everyone wants to be with his family or those who are the closest to his heart in this special time of year. That's why several airlines call attention to don't forget common rules when you are going to travel by plane. Here are some of this which you should obey to make your travel as smooth as possible. You must to be careful as packing your suitcase because each passenger is allowed to two pieces checked baggage free of charge weight no more than 50 pounds each, and measured length + height + width, no more than 62 inches. Don't forget to put your name, flight number and itinerary inside the baggage too, in the case of lost your luggage by the airlines, the return will be much easier.Passengers may carry on board one bag that fits in the overhead bin or under the sea + one more personal item.As everyone have registered Transportation Security Administration (TSA) limit the amounts of liquids, gels and aerosols you can take on board. Each item have to be three ounces or less and be in the clear zip-top bag. When you want to avoid unpleasant surprise and safe time of wrapping your gifts twice, leave it better unwrapped in your bag. TSA personnel could unwrap it to check it's content. Before leaving airport don't leave at home all important documents, passport, visas tourist cards and other as well as it's copies. And let one set of copies to have those who stay at home. 24 hours before leaving, you can print your boarding pass which can reduce your stress and make you feel more comfortable before your flight. Very helpful is to check your arrival and departure times, gate and luggage information via e-mail or telephone.Very important is to arrive to the airport in time, about 90 minutes before, at domestic flights and 2 to 3 hours before international flights. When you are coming to the airport don't forget possible traffic jams or another complications. After arrival you should write your parking location to some piece of paper or the best is to make a photo with your camera. Nothing comfortable to return home and spend hours with searching your car. When you are at the airport, and did everything according previous recommendations prepare your documents to move through security quickly. Take all large electronic items such as laptop out of their cases. After pass through security you can buy some beverages which you can take with you to the plane.Remember to safety of your children. Make sure they know all names of parents and how to contact them. You can have some kind of code which know only you and your children, to prevent kidnap. At last be on the gate 30 minutes before departure. On the board don't forget drink lots of liquids, and if something is wrong don't be shy and let the flight attendant help you. An expensive Olympics
by Claudia Sonea

If you want to go to the Olympics in August I recommend a large tent and finding a camp site, because the hotels will dry you out. According to China newspapers hotel rooms raise their normal prices up to 10 times and the normal prices are not that cheap either. Penny Xiang, who works on accommodations for the Beijing organizing committee related more on the subject trying to ease people's preoccupations. Xiang revealed that hotels are using a tactic to drive up rates and that is why prices for rooms during the August 8-24 games have skyrocketed. The owners want to sell the rooms at a good price but the market is not sure yet, so it is typically for Chinese to just wait and see what will happen. For the few hotels that have already signed contracts the prices were not that high. Furthermore, a rule in economy says that when the supply is higher than the demand, the price is bound to restrain, therefore because there are too many hotels in Beijing offering more rooms than requested the prices will eventually get to a more reasonable level. Beijing has 300,000 hotel rooms of which 30,000 rooms at 120 topflight hotels have been reserved by the organizing committee and held under contract for Olympic officials, sponsors and dignitaries. The organizers paid $380 a night for a standard room at a five-star hotel. The expected demand for rooms is around 250000, where as the supply is 270000. In consequence there will be still 20000 rooms remaining and people can choose from a variety of offers and the prices will downgrade regarding if indeed there will that many Olympics fans. Nevertheless, neither the organizers nor city officials would step in to set prices. A good thins it that hotels no longer require to book a room for a period of 18-20 days, it can be only five days and Beijing organizers are also holding 20,000 rooms in the Olympic and media village. The city expects 500,000 non-Chinese to visit Beijing during the 17-day games, with about 1 million domestic tourists added to the total. I advice you to wait and see or at least buy a tent you never know when it comes on handy.

Be A Trafalgar Square Statue!Replace this Title

by Kamila Moravcikova

Yes, this is not a joke. You can really become a part of a Trafalgar Square. If you feel like you are supposed to be the right one, watch out the competition that is being run by London officials in effort to fill the empty "fourth plinth". It is an Antony Gormley's concept that proposes that there is no use for stone, granite, bronze or an experienced hand of the sculptor. All he needs is a myriad of people staring at the plinth willing to go "onstage" and be an one-hour-statue. And it has even a deeper meaning & it means that you are in individualist we all have to honor. The trouble is whether the weather would be willing to colaborate so he can find some potential statues. And there are five another problems. Another sculptures, projects, designs that were short listed. For example the remains of a civilians vehicle that has been destroyed during an attack in Iraq. And the author is even not trying to pretend that that is an artwork.Well, if you feel like you need a little bit of love you should pray Tracey Emin's work will win. The Meerkats, small mammals living toghether in desert are designed to be a part of fourth plinth as they are a symbol of unity and safety (and one may ask what happened to woman that created "Everyone I Have Ever Slept With" tent?!). Actually, there are some more artworks & mirrors that "brings the clouds down to the ground" and illuminated peace sign that is powered by wind and the sun. After all this, the replica of Nelson's ship in a bottle just seems to be incredibly corny. If you are not interested in being a statue, but you would like to join next year competition & what about exposing empty fourth plinth and calling it "Empty Fourth Plinth"?

A380 ready for maiden flight

by Corina Ciubotaru

The first Airbus A380 to carry passengers as a commercial flight will take off on Thursday, November 25th from Singapore. It's been a long wait for the people eager to be the first to board it, but the day is finally here and some of them paid huge amounts for a ticket from Singapore Airlines that would take them straight to Sydney. The largest sum was paid during an auction by a man named Julian Hayward, who agreed to spend $100,380 for two one-way trips. Singapore Airlines is one of the few companies that placed an order for the A380; six other planes are scheduled to be built before 2009 provided there will be no more delays, out of the total of 189 orders for the superjumbo. Not many airports can operate an aircraft this big so its success will depend on how well owners will be able to manage its routes and users, but what's certain is that a permanent route will be established between San Francisco and Hong Kong in early 2009 the latest, and possibly another one between Singapore and London. Other airlines that expect the arrival of their own A380s are Qantas and Lufthansa, which eventually plan to fly them to the USA, as does Emirates Air, which has placed 47 orders. Only 3 airports in America will be ready to receive the massive aircraft before 2025: JFK in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, along with 17 others around the world, including Heathrow in London, Tokyo Narita and Paris Charles de Gaulle.

High-speed trains are changing Europe

by Natalia Holvova

There are new possibilities of traveling in Europe using high-speed trains in more and more European places. Traveling by these new comfortably equipped and perfectly working trains can compete with flying by planes, special in the areas where using planes is useless for such a short distance. Paris, London, Brussels and Amsterdam are such a popular European destinations so close to use planes but it can appear very far to use slow and unpalatable trains. This is the past of course, since the high-speed Eurostar trains provide services on this tracks.Sitting in nicely tapestried huge soft seat with possibility of getting coffee, tea or other warm or cold drinks from the bar offer or little snack is making your visit on the board even more attractive. As these trains are mainly used by all kinds of businessmen, the air-conditioned carriages offer Internet connection and daily papers from the countries the train goes through. The sales on the rails where Eurostars started operating last year surged almost double as well as the number of passenger was the biggest in the train traveling history. It is amazing how technology miracles can change our lives. We have more and better opportunities than any generation in the past. Long distance trips up and down the Europe are becoming shorter and we are closer to each other. Businesses are wider and people are globetrotters! The way we live and think is on the top of the history and the only thing we can do is taking advantages of all opportunities we can get.

Learning to fly

by Kamila Moravcikova

I have been living near the small airport since I was born. The awful noise when the plane is landing or launching is nothing unfamiliar to me. However, I don't think I can really imagine what it means to live near large airport with really rush traffic and officials trying to cover it by helping people who live further (because it's easier and you are helpful in making the noise a bit reasonable and at least you have some results). I'm saying this as a self-appointed "Dark Side Of Flights And Airports" expert. What I really don't like about flying is....flying. Don't get me wrong, I am not afraid of being in heights or of crashing down. Well, after spending 10 hours in totally uncomfortable seat you you wish the plane would fall down so the pain would stop (if you are the 1st class traveler, you may not know what is this about). I just can't stand the never-ending waiting at the airport, safety controls, delays, missing your plane, realizing that you may spend whole night at the airport, the crabby airport and plane staff driving you crazy. I am exhausted of all the unexpected things that happen to you when you think you finally managed it (baby diaper stuck in lavatory causing that the plane cannot take off/broken brake-gear leading to the cancellation of flight, etc.).One song says "I close my eyes and hope that there's a real smooth flight...this time".

Pay if you have Spilled
by Barbora Kasparova

Humans contribute to the devastation of the environment in many ways. There are things that we can predict (such as global warming or growing of waste material), yet there are accidents we do not anticipate such as oil spills. And since the nature can neither deal with them itself nor can sue the culprits for damages, as those who are responsible are not always willing to take the blame, there are ways people do it "in her name". A very recent case is the one of Cosco Busan oil spill earlier this November, when the company owning the ship Regal Stone Ltd. of Hong Kong, the insurer and the pilot of the ship are being sued by the U.S. federal government (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/01/MN90TM5R4.DTL&hw=oil+spill&sn=006&sc=407).What's the legal side of the story, i.e. on what basis does the government in that particular case sue?We still remember the infamous Exxon Valdez case in 1989. In response to this catastrophic accident, the US Congress passed the Oil Pollution Act in 1990 (OPA 1990), which sets the framework for any lawsuits in the field. What it basically provides for is the liability of the owner, or the operator of the ship for removal costs and damages, in other words, anyone who feels that they suffered harm and were forced to incur costs due to the oil spill can go right ahead and sue the company. I think everyone knows about the pesky machines used in airports and called metal detectors passengers. Well now the federal government thought to improve them and make them more appealing to the passengers, therefore a body-scanning machine that uses radio waves to detect foreign objects like explosives, metal, plastic and liquids, anything that might be hidden on the body, according to the official press release given by Mike Golden, the Transportation Security Administration's chief technology officer. Golden explained that the machine uses electromagnetic waves to create an image based on energy reflected from the body and not radiation. There will be a large portal of about 9 feet tall and 6 feet wide and all passengers will go through, lift their arms while the machine takes two scans using radio waves- all the process will last for a minute and 1.8 seconds. US Department of Transportation Security Administration's spokeswoman Ellen Howe said the TSA officer in charge of the screening will never see faces that also will be blurred, so person cannot be recognized. Tests for the new machine took place on Thursday at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Besides the fact that officials have to determine if is more effective than the metal detectors, they also have to confront the privacy advocates. Barry Steinhardt, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's program on technology and liberty stated that the screening literally shows naked people and if Playboy would have come up with the idea, politicians would have classified it as pornographic. Nevertheless, John F. Kennedy and Los Angeles international will be equipped with such devices and there will be a trial period before a final decision. Stay connected and watch out at the airport, you never know when you might go!ups, naked!
