Less air travel delays
by Claudia Sonea
In December last year, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey came up with a 100 recommendations plan to solve the flight delays issue that congested air traffic of three major US airports (LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports). The report had 32 pages and 27 of the suggestions could deal with the matter by this summer, if they were implemented. All the suggestions were made by keeping in count the rising traffic at the airports and although they are not amazing all by themselves together would create a capacity of 3.5 million of additional passengers. Among the recommendations were express flight paths for the routes from New York to Washington that would ease these congested routes, extra air traffic controllers and even some actions available for the controllers that however are not that safe. On the other hand Federal officials would rather incline for reducing the number of hourly flights and if airports will not do it they are thinking to impose it to them. U.S. Department of Transportation has got involved too and formed its committee on New York-area flight delays due to the fact that airports in NY area create three-quarters of US flight delays. President Bush was also intrigued by the congestion formed around NY and requested in September for urgent measures in order to not aggravate the situation of the country's air travel network. Nevertheless spokesman Brian Turmail, Department of Transportation, stated on Thursday that in spite of better operations at the airport the situation may worsen as a consequence of an increase in flights forecasted for next year and for which he suggests congestion pricing that would charge higher user fees for flights during peak hours. In the report these suggestions did not appear. What will happen next? Customers might sense the feedback on their pocket and the expenses of all improvements will be found in the ticket's price. Bush gave them a term and hopefully measures will be taken sooner and not later. Don't go away, more to come.
