NY Stewart Airport has a bright fufure
by Zuzana Moravcova
The passenger terminal at Stewart International Airport appears to have a bright future. It could be a state-of-the-art facility that attracts millions of travelers a year. It already serves as a relief valve for increasing congestion at Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, and officials hope it can be an economic engine for New York. Anthony Shorris, executive director of the Port Authority, which has a 93-year lease on Stewart and runs the other three airports, said: "Stewart can be kind of a beacon for a lot of things. An anchor for growth in the Hudson Valley, a major reliever of the other airports, a cargo and job-generating facility for a new economic growth pattern, and a demonstration of the potential for sustainable development in aviation." The Port Authority took over the airport in November and is going to spend $500 million on it over the next 10 years. There already have been made some remarkable changes, such as wide new access roads leading to the airport and a 350-space parking, which all went up in three weeks, or new chairs abound in the baggage claim area. The airport's general manager Diannae Ehler said with the arrival of several new airlines, Stewart will serve three times more passengers than in 2006. According to passengers, it is cheaper to fly from Stewart I. A., even when they have to drive 100 miles to get there, than to fly from another one closer to their homes. The airport is also developing large business parks in the vast non-aviation related acreage of the Airport. The expansion business parks are located primarily in the Town of New Windsor. The Town has been busy preparing for development of those business parks by upgrading and enlarging the capacity of the Town's water treatment facility and sewage treatment plant. The Town of New Windsor must be looking forward to working hand in hand with Stewart International Airport to become a vital link in the U.S. transportation network, the key asset in the Hudson Valley of the State of New York and a home base for thousands of high technology and other well paying jobs.
