Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: The Lynx rocket unveiled
by Zuzana Zelenakova
Who would think few years ago that space traveling will become a reality so soon? Although only the richest ones can afford such a luxury these days it is undoubtedly a huge step forward. As this newly discovered industry becomes more and more popular different companies recognize great opportunity to profit from it. On Wednesday, a California aerospace company introduced at a news conference the design of a two-seat rocket ship able to take its passengers more than 37 miles above the Earth. Xcor Aerospace plans to begin with test flights in 2010. The Lynx has the size of small private plane and can also take off from a runway like a normal plane and reach a top speed of Mach 2. The rocket will be able to fly four times a day and the traveler will be seated in co-pilot position so he can enjoy the most intense experience."We have designed this vehicle to operate much like a commercial aircraft," said the company's Chief Executive Officer Jeff Greason. Xcor Aerospace has already begun negotiations with companies that could operate the Lynx in the future. This announcement comes only two months after British billionaire Richard Branson and aerospace designer Burt Rutan introduced their model of SpaceShipTwo. It is constructed for Branson's company Virgin Galactic and its test flights may begin this year. On the contrary of the Lynx this rocket will carry six passengers plus two pilots. Each passenger will pay about $200,000 for the ride. The competition is definitely on the rise in the space tourism industry.
