Chris Cantell Discusses Travel: Eruption on the bid
by Claudia Sonea

Now you have the one time opportunity to take part at a historic moment: the eruption of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano. The eruption of a volcano during a human life span is very rare and its effects will definitely influence the planet by creating mountains or features of mountains. In Hawaii's history the lava from volcanoes eruptions created lava lakes and cones, or fed radiating flows. Kilauea is one of the five shield volcanoes forming the Islands of Hawaii and its name ("spewing" or "much spreading" in Hawaiian) comes from the fact that it is the most active volcano in the past 25 years, with over 9,000 visitors a day at Halemaumau Crater where they can see the ash and the sulfur dioxide rising, small balls of lava that erupted more violently then ever; only in 1924 it happened something similar. Meantime the southeast part of the Big Island is visited by 10,000 a day due to the spectacular image of fresh lava uniting with the ocean, thus producing a giant cloud of steam. You should not be concerned too much because emergency officials are well prepared to evacuate in case winds change, spreading the fumes in habituated areas with a population approaching 10,000. Up to this point the winds keep the course towards southeast. Nevertheless, you should take care at the levels of sulfur dioxide that could serious put your health at risk. Due to the fact that the fume was moved by the wind mostly to the ocean, people are not endangered in any way. Most of the geologists say that there is no possibility to know when it will happen and that it is the most intense eruption seen in decades. You still have a chance to see it, because the national park and the visitor center will remain open, except trails heading to Halemaumau Crater and part of Crater Rim Drive. What do you say, are you up for a trip?
